Delaware County Deputy Fired for Sleeping on the Job
    CopCar.jpg

A Delaware County Sheriff's Deputy has been fired for sleeping in his patrol car while on the job.

Deputy Herbert Holding Jr. was found asleep on property near Muncie, Indiana that is owned by cartoonist Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Merit Board voted unanimously Monday to immediately fire Holding. He had been on administrative leave with pay since October 2007.

At a hearing last week, the 33 year old Holding testified he didn't intend to fall asleep, but was trying to re-energize after drinking a caffeine drink.

According to an investigator, witnesses saw Holding sleeping in his patrol car at the same location several times before reporting it.

Holding's attorney says there are options for appeal.
