As a former optics snob, I would urge you to consider the PA PLX 1-8 Compact.

I have one and am very pleased. Thinking about finding it a permanent home on a Mk12 and buying another, lol.

Kirk, is that the $1500 one? That’s still pretty pricey in my book. How’s the eye relief at max? All the 1-8 or 1-10 scopes I’ve played with had terrible eye relief on the high end. It might be worth the price if it’s really a LPVO that can run like a real scope at high power.

I hear you about the high end and having your eyeball touching the objective, lol. Why most of my stuff is 1-4X.

I’ll confess, I didn’t watch the video. I’m just not much of a video review guy.

I would happily spend the coin if it somehow solved the eye relief issue, although my wallet is relieved by your response.

I have some good 1-4 optics, although if I was in the market a Steiner would probably be at the top.

Most of my yote hunting is at fairly close ranges. I can't remember ever going above 6x, usually have scope set at 3 or 4x. If a longer shot does present itself, I'll add a notch or 3 of magnification if time allows. Clarity and low light performance trump magnification IMHO.

I've hunted a few years with thermal. When I first started, I thought about carrying a shotgun. Now, there's no way I'd consider it. With thermal, you see them long before they see you so there's no sense in letting them get into shotgun range. I carry a rifle on a tripod, chest rig with my thermal, hand calls, remote, etc, and my caller. I have no desire to carry a shotgun for that 1 in 500 shot. When they get close enough, I whimper, they stop, and I pop them.

Yes. With a handheld, I can scan 360 without having to sweep everything with my rifle. It's safer, quicker, and easier. My handheld also has a range finder which makes it easier to figure out when to pop them.

So what sighting system do you use for the shot once they're within range?

I may have missed something; sorry if that's so.

I only have the ATN IR scope so far, and I rest it on a pivoting shooting chair rest, so my scope is also my spotter.

Primary Arms had a deal on the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8. An LPVO would work really well for what you are wanting to do.

Considering you have a "limited budget", I would consider a 3-9x with good and big glass. Everybody makes a 3-9x and sells a bunch of them and they just might be the best value in many scope lines.

Well,I went to range and for first time in my life I shot at 100 yard range .I have a 3x9x40 scope on it . I did pretty good with scope and got decent groups.Will tighten groups up a bit before yote hunting with it , but it seems for me very doable. I used PMC BRONZE ammo . When I tighten groups with PMC , I will go to premium ammo to get even tighter.I am going to look for a good price on a variable 14 power scope , I would like a little more power and clarity.

The gun is going to do best with the ammo “it” likes. Brand name has only some effect. Shot as many brand names as you can. Hand loading can bring out the very best the rifle can do. Range time is as important as anything else in the equation. My opinion only. Congrats n good luck.

With Nikon out of the game I would suggest a Vortex scope, for a budget friendly intro scope. Holiday season is a great time to get a deal.

Agree with the general consensus... a lower power scope will allow you to keep them in view. As soon as you run a scope up to 14x + you'll have an incredibly hard time even seeing them through the ocular.
