I've actually been struggling with this for the past few weeks. I was literally at the time clock this morning, and preparing to punch out for the last time, before my boss caught me.
My biggest fear is not being able to find anything that pays well enough to support my family, since better pay is only available to someone with a degree. I admit that I'm an idiot.
Today, I wasn't concerned about the what if. I hit my limit, and dread having to return tomorrow. Each day has been increasingly worse for over six months but, it has been a downward spiral for two years.
I've tried to remain optimistic but, having your job threatened, treated like crap, and huge pay reductions, has a way of altering perception.

I wish you the best of luck on your decision.

Granted I have probably matured some, but every time I got to this point with a job, the decision ended up being made for me one way or another. People aren't blind, they can tell when you're miserable.

So if you felt lIke could no longer stay in principle would you make a change? Just asking for a friend.
Principle’s can be floating or they can be hard set. Does it violate the good book or any laws? That’s a sure change.. if my principle is I bowl on Thursday night and there is an emergency that calls me in on bowling night that is floating. (Most likely I would say I would be in when my score was done) 50/50 employee time verses company time.

    Remember one other thing .

A bird did not fly south for the winter with the other birds because food was plentiful and the weather was warm. One morning it rained and then froze and his little wings stuck to his body. A cow saw him a **** all over him. The **** stunk but was warm and his wings worked. The farm cat said hey little bird come over to the water bowl and clean that **** off you. The bird cleaned himself off and the cat ate him.

Not everyone who shits on you is doing you a disservice and not everyone who cleans the **** off you is doing you a favor.

Can't count the number of jobs I've had. I'm procrastinating on looking right now.

With 20%+ real inflation you just can't sit around and wait for your employer to give you massive raises out of the kindness of their hearts.
20% inflation….Bidet said July had 0% inflation go figure.

For the most part where I am now has a lot of good people and a few at the upper echelon are driven by a political agenda.

I’ve drug up off two jobs in the same day. Then went to work down the street the next day. When they were building the Lilly office building down town on Tibbs I think, I drug up from an outfit in the back and went to work for another before I could get to my truck. My record I think was Nucor Steel Crawfordsville, about 3 1/2 hrs. Life’s to short, if you don’t like the outfit or people —-get—— you’ll live a lot longer and be happier.

I know that feeling too. But you know that, at the end of the day, it's better to take responsibility for yourself and leave on your own terms with your own plan. Waking up the next day and remembering that you don't have a job now because you were dumb sucks.

What type of work do you do?

It's the hottest labor market in our life times and companies across all industries are desperate for people. It seems like now would be the time to start working on an exit strategy to get the boat a little closer to the dock so when you step off you don't end up wet.

I need to sit down and try and write a list of all my past jobs. It's easily more than 50 if you count all the short term temp stuff I did as a college kid over the summers.

Variety is the spice of life. I'd like to think I picked up at least a little bit of knowledge from all of them.

A story too long to tell here, but over many years there is only one "employee review" that I remember and meant much.

Boss asked me, "If you had to go out and do something for yourself tomorrow, could you do it?"

I must have had the "I'm getting fired" look in my eyes because he said, "You're not getting fired....but have you ever thought about what you would do if this company was not here tomorrow or if your wife was seriously Ill or some other thing you never planned on happened and you could not work here?"

He then asked, "Are you building a balance sheet of skills so that you could stand on your own if you had to? Or if you wanted to?"

    Changed my entire paradigm.

I doubt many discussions like that take place these days...and that is truly unfortunate. Most reviews, I suspect, are around what the company needs folks to do for the company...and that is fair.

I was blessed to have met a guy that had a broader view...and it made all the difference.

Decades later, I still keep in touch with that guy.

Many companies today want to assign a "mentor".... good luck with that.

Use your God given talents to take care of what is most important...the rest is detail which will work out in the long run.
That was very sage advice I leaned the same lesson early on to expand my skill sets and it has proven to work out well for me over the years whenever a job change was needed.

A HR manager once told me that you should look for a new job every 5 years, preferably within the company, but look nonetheless.

If you find something better, no one should fault you for moving on. If it don't find something better, sometimes you will adjust your thinking about your current gig and decide it isn't so bad.

I haven't always done this myself because I loathe that period of time between interviews when you are actively looking and still working your current job.

But for kicks, here is my list:
    1. paperboy
    2. working for my dad in his restaurant
    3. radiator shop
    4. Best products-warehouse work
    5. gas station-pumping gas/washing cars
    6. General Motors-painter
    7. college resident assistant
    8. Truck driver-plumbing distributor
    9. buyer-plumbing, electrical, and HVAC dealer
    10. TRW-sales
    11. Federal-Mogul-sales
    12. American Woodmark Cabinets-sales
    13. chemical company-buyer/sales
    14. Paslode/Duo-Fast(ITW)-sales
    15. Packaging -sales
    16. Raybestos Powertrain-sales
    17. plastic injection molding-sales(current)

Heck, there may be more and that doesn't include small gigs like snow shoveling and working on cabins in northern MI. Or that summer I was a "boat boy" on a charter fishing boat in FL. Or when I helped at a horse racing track one summer.

Sheesh. I get tired just looking at that list!
