Boone County Sheriff’s Office 2021 Training

The Boone County Sheriff's Office is excited to announce that we will continue to offer training for citizens after postponing training during the pandemic. We are proud to be one of the few law enforcement agencies in the country that allows citizens to train alongside military and law enforcement. Due to the shortened time frame and range availability, there will be fewer courses offered. We are working on many courses for 2022! In addition to our citizen handgun courses, we are again bringing in Steve Tarani, the number one instructor in the country regarding personal security and safety, for Hands to Guns (Live Fire) September 11-12, 2021, 2021, and Advanced Edged Weapons/Karambit December 4-5, 2021. Our citizens classes, Principles of the Defensive Handgun, will be offered on the following dates. Please contact Joy Stewart at jstewart@co.boone.in.us with any questions.

    July 24-25, 2021 (Co-ed)

    August 21-22, 2021 (Ladies Only)

    September 25-26, 2021 (Co-ed)

    Principles of the Defensive Handgun

    Price: $200

    July 24-25, 2021 (Co-ed)

    August 21-22, 2021 (Ladies Only)

    September 25-26, 2021 (Co-ed)

    Course Description:

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is offering a 16 hour “Principles of the Defensive Handgun” course to qualified applicants in 2021. It will be held at the Boone County Sheriff Firearms Range in Lebanon, IN. In the past, we have had many requests for a ladies only class. Due to these requests, we are offering a “Ladies Only Principles of the Defensive Handgun” course. There is no difference in the curriculum. It is merely limited to ladies only. (A small .25 or .22 or .32 or .380 caliber pistol is NOT recommended for this course. They inhibit the training and learning process.)

This course is designed for the novice to the experienced male or female firearms owner. The two day course instructs the student in Gun handling, Marksmanship, and most importantly, Mindset. It is instructed by Major Brian Stevenson, of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, and staff. Stevenson is the department's Senior Range Master, a guest Firearms Instructor at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, and the former Commander of the Boone County Special Response Team, a multi-agency “SWAT” team. Stevenson has been an Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certified firearms instructor for 20 years and has been teaching this curriculum for many of those years.

    Requirements:

Requirements include either a valid Indiana Firearms Permit or Criminal History Report verifying the student as a "Proper Person," eye and hearing protection, a suitable pistol with at least two magazines, a belt holster, approximately 400 rounds of ammunition, and tuition of $200, $75 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. (As there is no fiscal impact on the Department for the course, all costs relating to the course must come from the student tuition's.)

There will be a 12 student minimum and a 24 student maximum for all Principles of Defensive Handgun classes.

For all Full-Time Boone County Employees and all Local (within Boone County) Law Enforcement Officers there will be no charge for this course.

Once there is a 12 student minimum; there will be a discounted rate for all Full-Time County Employees immediate families (family members living under the same roof) and Local Law Enforcement Officers immediate families (family members living under the same roof). That rate will be $100.00 for the class.

Steve Tarani’s Hands to Guns (Live Fire)

    September 11-12, 2021

    Price: $275

In contact there is control and with stability speed. In all there are fifteen factors that affect your performance in firearms response to an active threat. Each factor has a time element which determines tactical advantage. Hands-to-Guns addresses each of these factors and reduces those time elements to give you the tactical advantage.

The average personal attack unfolds in under two seconds. Response time is measured at an estimated 4.0 seconds from initial awareness to first round on confirmed threat from concealment. Do the math! How can you go from threat recognition to first round downrange in the least amount of time? How can you develop the critical handgun deployment as applied to your own personal defense?

Whether you are civilian (open or concealed carry) or law enforcement (on or off duty), this training is designed for armed response versus single or multiple attackers and is essential to anyone anticipating engagement of a physical threat at close quarters and under duress.

Yes, you shoot on a flat range to develop your firearms handling and marksmanship skills, and of course you train in defensive tactics, but never the two worlds shall meet, that is, until circumstances demand you go from hands-on to guns and vice versa. Effective transition from hand-to-hand to hand-to-gun at extreme close quarters and under duress is a skill that is developed only by professional instruction and supervised repetition.

To qualify for this class: You MUST be able to pass the Bill Wilson 5x5 Handgun Skill Test with a score of 50 or better. All registrants will be tested! No refunds will be issued so please don’t register if you can’t do it! If you do register and fail to pass, then you are welcome to attend the course using your blue gun but you will not be allowed to shoot.

Packout gear: one duty or CCW pistol, holster (IWB/ OWB) and a matching blue/ red (inert training pistol). three magazines (and mag pouches), eye and ear protection, ball cap, cover garment (course is run from concealment), range kit and 500 rounds of ammunition.

Steve Tarani’s Advanced Edged Weapons/ Karambit

    December 4-5, 2021

    Price $275

Learn the critical skills for using a fixed or folding blade in self-defense. What’s the best knife for everyday personal carry? What’s the difference in performance between serrated and non-serrated edges? What is blade geometry and which features should you look for in a fixed or folding knife?

Your fixed, folding or curved blade is useless to you in any self-defense situation unless you can readily access it, deploy it and be ready to fight for your life. In this course, you will be introduced to realistic defensive and rapid deployment of both folding and fixed blades. You will be trained in what to do if you have nothing in your hands and you were attacked by one or more assailants wielding an edged weapon.

You will also be introduced to the curve blade – how it is used, its advantages over a straight edge and what makes the curved blade such a unique defensive tool employed at conversational ranges. There is no prerequisite for this course. Instruction includes: Pros and cons of fixed/ folding/ straight/ curved blades, carry, access, rapid deployment, edged weapon handling and unarmed defense against edged weapons, critical dynamics of personal security, the truth about disarming, what are and how to defend against the seven lethal strike points of the body.

I took the first course quite some time ago. Classroom and live fire on the range. VERY elementary. The second class - Hands to guns - sounds more interesting. Anyone who has shot IDPA or USPSA should be able to handle the 5x5 skills test without too much trouble.

Might be a good class to develop mental skills. I’ve often wondered if taking any sort of training might serve you well if you were ever involved in an actual shooting incident and, as a result, either prosecuted or sued ? Or both.
