    Greetings all

i am looking to get a pistol primarily for taking to the range for some handgun practice

from my past experience i like the 9mm - (9x19) - as it is not too expensive and is still a "decent" round..

i have been thinking about several options:

    Glock19
    Springfield XDm
    Ruger 96
    Beretta 92

do you have any suggestions to the above - or even new suggestions??

    thanks

    h.

    I have a Ruger SR9 I like a lot. I have a couple Glocks, but not 9mm. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either.

I was/am a die hard HK fan, and my wife Pami loves Sigs.
that said, I would recommend the Glock 19 every day of the week.
Magazines are half the cost of HK or Sig mags. They are every bit as reliable. And you can buy replacement parts locally wherever you live..... not that it's likely you'll ever need them.

Glocks have more sight options than almost any handgun except maybe the 1911..... Everyone makes holsters for Glocks, Most are even kept in stock and are ready to ship the day you order.

There are a lot of reasons to own a Glock. :)

By the way, if you are like me you will eventually want to carry. I started out thinking protection at home and range shooting. But it didn't take a whole lot of reading before I realized I needed to get license to carry a handgun and start carrying whenever I could. If you hang around here very long you'll be in the same place before long. It's a grand journey.

I said that to say this: think about getting a gun you will want to carry, not just one you want to shoot at the range.

Is this your first and only handgun? Do you already have your LTCH (License to Carry a Handgun) or are you going to apply?

(In Indiana, you must have a LTCH in order to transport to any range)

In my opinion, and I say this with experience- not just throwing out commentaries.
I have shot the Ruger, XD, and the Glock as well. Shot the Glock- was not really impressed, moved to a Ruger- the same, went to an XD, and the XD is now my primary carry. I say this w/ experience... just my two cents. All four have a different feel in your hand, may the force be with you when you buy the XD.

    Glock 19, hands down.

Here are some reasons I listed in this helpful thread: https://www.indianagunowners.com/forums/handguns/6791-glock_19_why.html

    • lightweight
    • not too big, not too small
    • will go 'bang' every time
    • high ammo capacity
    • 9mm is widely available and (comparitively) inexpensive
    • accessories and parts are very easy to find in stock
    • not prone to rusting
    • interchangability of Glock parts
    • very defensible in court
    • simple to operate under stress, and still very safe
    • easy to field strip and clean
    • consistant trigger pull
    • will still fire without a magazine
    • because it is, indeed, awesome

    will argue for sammiches.

    LTCH

I am new to Indiana - so i have yet to look into the rules here - normally it would hae thouht that transportation to and from the range would be ok in a locked case with the ammo seperate - so thanks a lot for the advice i will make sure to look into what permits i need - normally a LTCH should not be too difficult (???)

    thanks
