That means that the barrel, near the muzzle end has holes or slots machined through the barrel to release gas to reduce muzzle lift. the porting helps to reduce the muzzle lift and recoil.

I have two revolvers that are ported.

One is a .454 Casull "Raging Bull" 8-3/8" barrel
The other is a Taurus model 607 7-shot .357magnum w/ a 4" barrel

There is really NO comparison to "ported vs. non-ported" barrels.

Muzzle lift is GREATLY reduced, and makes follow-up shots much quicker.

One drawback is, a shot at night will likely "flash" you as well as your target. The porting does produce pretty flames out of the top of your barrel:D

A draw back is the enhanced noise. They are too loud for me!
I think the extra noise it causes offsets the reduction in recoil.

I've heard people state the argument that ported/compensated handguns will affect your nightvision via the vertical muzzle flash. Having not shot a ported/compensated handgun at night, I'll still call bull****.

I bet it will effect it. The flash of light means your eyes will try to adjust, the in the dark, take a second or two to readjust. That's twice with each shot. My father speaks of sitting in completely blacked out tents for hours prior to night missions in Viet Nam T acclimate their eyes to the dark and the mere act of someone lighting a cigarette would cause them to have to start all over from the beginning of the clock(it usually meant a beating at best).

Try it sometime with a .357 or .44 mag at night or low light conditions.
You'll probably be supprised at how long it takes your eyes to readjust even without a ported barrel. That's why Ammunition Manufactures have started making reduced flash ammo. Just my :twocents:

Hey, does anybody know if you can modify your existing / original slide that came with the gun or do you have to get a new aftermarket slide?

You could get a new "C" barrel and slide, but unless you found an amazing deal the cost would be only slightly less than buying a used, complete "C" pistol.

Mag-na-port will do your existing pistol for $140, but it will be cutting through the Tenifer layers.

I just recently traded my xd40 with compensated barrel off for the noise issue it had. The thing was a cannon! Even with ear protection it was still very very loud. Recoil was almost non exhistant but it was at the price of lots of report
