XM177’s are great pieces of history…direct predecessor to the M4 (XM4). Actual Colt USGI are harder and harder to come by, but still can be found for more and more of a price at gun broker. Unless you’ve got 20k to drop, forget about an actual period lower, and go straight to Nodak Spud (best quality retro hardware out there)…just be prepared to wait.

    Show and tell.

Show: Here's a photo of a 10.5" AR pistol, custom engraved for the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Tell: This will soon (once I get tickets made up) be a raffle gun for VFW Post 1279, along with a, pre-64 (circa 1950) Winchester Model 70 in 30-06, and $500 cash. There will be a thread in the classifieds, and I will be traveling to gun shows...

Don't ask questions now. All will be explained soon.

I haven't been hanging around Ingo as much as I really should have lately. And as such, some of my more recent builds and acqusitions haven't appeared on here. So time to change that.

    IMG_0364.jpg

Here is my early M4 build.

I got lucky and found the BCM pinned and welded 14.5 uppers on sale sometime a couple years back. So I jumped and ordered one.
I combined it with a USGI Colt BCG I found at Traildust surplus parts. It was in real good condition, but I put new gas rings on it anyway.
USGI detachable carry handle from there too.
Lower is just a PSA built lower, with a brownells stock on it.

It obviously fits a bayonet. In this case it's a M9 Phrobis III with complete and matching sheath/scabbard with the extra pouch and the stone actually in it. Wow... I just looked at prices on these. I sure didn't pay what they cost now. It may actually now be the most expensive single part in the picture.. Dang bayonets have gotten expensive.

Sling is just a USGI silent sling.. I realize I could use the triangle part that connects to the gas block, but those are hell on the finish (i have one), so I used a paracord sling connection.

Nice! I want to build a couple clones of the rifles I carried in the Military. M-16A1 and A2, but the uppers are the hardest to find. I stupidly passed on a Colt A2 upper a couple years ago that was $140 at a gun show. I had already bought a bunch of crap before I found it and did not have the extra cash for it. I also want to build up an M4 clone like yours, as I have the furniture for it already.

Speaking of A2s, here are my "twins".. Why have one, when you can have two?

The top one has an upper built by AR15Sports. It has a government profile and a 1/7 twist. Lower is one I built with an Anderson stripped.

Bottom one is a bog stock Wyndham Maine built Bushmaster HBAR profile with a 1/9 twist.

Two M7 bayonets of course, top one is a Gen Cut, bottom one is a BOC

Slings are both USMC Modern nylon shooting slings. Not the Vietnam issue seat belt material ones. These are more like the old M1 canvas slings, but nylon.

Its so nice to see so many ARs back in their original guise.

Until Id say about 4 or 5 years ago. it was rare to find ARs that way. I mean I get it, the rail or guard attached to the barrel nut is a nice thing. But there it just something about an AR with the carry handle, delta ring hand guards, and a taper pin affixed front sight tower/gas block on it. Brownells yes is a big part of it, but Brownells responded to the demand, I don't think they created it..

In any case, I will get my A1 mongrel out in a bit. It's a mixmaster.

Here it is, my A1. I originally built this in 2014 before the retro craze was really beginning. The stock furniture is all authentic. The butt stock even has a rack number on it, not with paint, but with one of those 80s office punch label makers. You know the ones that you had to turn the dial to select each letter/digit... then you peeled and stuck it. Its on the comb of the stock just under the charging handle. The upper is an authentic M16A1 upper, that had taken a tour through Israel and been painted black. Barrel is from A15sports. The lower is the second lower, this was originally built on an Anderson lower, but later when brownells had some BLEMS, I changed it over to an XM16 type partial fence lower. BCG is a nickel colored one from PSA to aproximate the old chrome BCGs. It's got a replica three prong weed catcher flash hider on it, but I have in a baggie an M16A1 birdcage too.... dated 2005, why was uncle sugar buying A1 birdcages then? Who knows.

How about a facelift on a build. 18" ba Hansen, aero odg anodized receiver set, 15" mi quad rail, redfield revolution 4-12. If I ever get to shoot another revere's riders (kids are great) this is what I'm bringing. May swap to a 2-10x
