“Gun industry lobbyists have fought for decades against tougher oversight by casting gun dealers”

-ok so the gun lobby is the bad guy:rolleyes:

    But wait a minute

“Reporters spent more than a year analyzing documents from nearly 2,000 gun dealer inspections that uncovered violations from 2015 to 2017. The reports showed some dealers outright flouting the rules, selling weapons to convicted felons and domestic abusers, lying to investigators and fudging records to mask their unlawful conduct. In many cases when the ATF caught dealers breaking the law, the agency issued warnings, sometimes repeatedly, and allowed the stores to operate for months or years. Others are still selling guns to this day. “

so the ATF found evidence of felony gun trafficking but did not even bother to pull the store’s license let alone refer for prosecution?

but the gun lobby is the bad guys. Sounds like all the oversight in the world wouldn’t do a bit of good if the punishment part of the law is never used.

If the ATF continues to exist at all, it's only job should be shutting down FFL dealers who blatantly break the law and sell guns to felons. Not arbitrarily changing legal definitions to dictate which guns can or can't be sold.

That said, this article is an excellent example of how the left works hand in glove with the media to push an agenda and propaganda.

Step 1: Nominate for ATF director someone who works directly for a gun control group.

Step 2: Launch a "media investigation" through The Trace, an anti-gun organization funded by Bloomberg and set up solely to be used as a front to push a gun control narrative report on stories related to "gun violence."

Step 3: Use examples of government incompetence and failures of bureaucracy to create a narrative that the ATF is feckless and possibly even willingly inept.

Step 4: Advocate for the idea that the way to remedy the situation is to approve the nomination a gun control advocate who will crack down on the system and "fix" these failures that allow criminals to buy guns.

It's very much like money laundering. Each organization is established and designed to give credibility to the narrative. It's incestuous and gross, but most people don't connect the dots.

Seeing what’s coming out of the confirmation hearings it should be pretty obvious to any watching that they have a “culture” problem at the ATF. Their own mission statement from the justice department says they are to protect the public from illegal use and trafficking of firearms. Doesn’t say a word about regulating them out of existence. and yet the nominee for director thinks differently.

The mission of ATF is to protect communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products

The mission of the ATF is to make felons out of millions of otherwise law abiding gun owners when they leave them no other choice but to resist the gutting of their 2nd Amend rights.

Probably were tied to fast and furious scandal and I bet something similar is still going on. It just hasn't been exposed yet. I would not put it past our government to arm cartels or criminals. It keeps the honest citizens in fear and asking for more big government.

I sincerely doubt the "reporters" found anything of the sort. They probably found felons or abusers passing NICS checks and decided it must have been the dealers "flouting the rules".

Out of my interest in complying with house rules, I am withholding my commentary for the moment.

I am quite confident my unvarnished comments would be in violation of those rules.

One more Federal agency that we could easily live without.

NRA or SAF should sue on the grounds that the gun walking and failure to refer to prosecution felonies is endangering the public in direct violation of the ATf’s own mandate and mission statement
My bet would be that Gun Owners of America would be most likely to take on that court challenge...
