Drones themselves are not the problem, but the intent of the users is a definite concern to me. I could reasonably accept the limited use of a small portable airborne device to help locate a fleeing suspect who represents a risk to my officers and surrounding citizens, but don't care at all for the idea of continuous surveillance of citizens from above. It may also be the case that the new emphasis on drones is a cost-cutting measure; lower fuel, maintenance and overall operating costs, since a licensed pilot may not be required for operation. We have some personnel who are all fired up about the idea of getting a helicopter...to what end? They're expensive as hell to operate, require extensive training to fly, and would be flying around most of the time just wasting scarce taxpayer dollars. I'd much rather devote those resources to ground operations, where they'll go a lot farther and result in better service to the people who are paying the bills...YOU! The air unit will never be able to take a report, investigate an accident, or snap cuffs on a burglar. On the other hand, just a single remote-control drone can be deployed in minutes over a specific location to locate an armed criminal or a lost child. Sure, there would have to be a lot of public oversight to guard against intrusions on privacy, and I'm perfectly happy with that. A drone, just like my weapon, should only be used when absolutely necessary, and subject to scrutiny from the public, courts and administration. For about three hundred bucks, anyone on this board can buy a small UAV complete with two cameras and fly it right out of the box using an iPhone. The government isn't the only entity out there capable on spying on you...

Let me get this straight, since no one else seems to have commented on it: you're saying this bill actually says that the government will allow 30,000 armed drones to kill US citizens in the streets of America? Can you quote the language to me, please?

Just More Privacy Issues Never Imagined by FF

Our elected lawmakers need to start thinking about privacy issues more seriously. Cell phone cameras already present problems and street corner cameras have been foisted on us without discussion.

I am of the opinion that if one of these 'drones' (I saw some on news tonite that looked like hummingbirds) hover over my property for more than 1 minute or so that should constitute trespassing. If a utitlity or some such other 'legitimate' aerial photography is planned for a neighborhood, advance notice should be given. Law enforcement drones had better be well marked. I plan on starting some target practice this spring w my shotgun at 50 yards for something the size of a hummingbird.

There were many reasonable uses presented on the news tonite, but what about house thieves that use this technology for a few days to case a neighborhood? I don't even want to think about Govt misuse. What I am really starting to think about is that while I do nothing 'illegal' today to fear surveillance, that can change with a stroke of Obama's (or any other state and local officials') pen.
