    I was wondering what is louder , a 22 short sound or a air rifle sound? I heard that these pellet rifles are as loud as a 22 short or louder? Has anybody checked that out ? I am looking at a pellet rifle but if sound is the same volume, I might as well get the 22 short rifle.

    Most .22 shorts are quite loud, because they are supersonic.

    A supersonic spring piston airgun is very comparable. They are not quiet at all.

    The only way you save on sound with air rifles, is by getting a PCP.

    If you're talking about a pump up like the Sheridan I can tell you mine is pretty loud. With the max 10 pumps, it really cracks. I would still say my Browning 22 'short only' is louder though.

    I'm not sure about the airgun vs 22 short part, but if you decide you want something that can shoot 22 shorts, I would suggest that you might as well get a rifle that's designed to shoot 22 long rifle, 22 long AND 22 shorts. For example, a lever action 22LR like a Henry. I have one and it shoots 22LR, 22 long, and 22 shorts accurately and without any issues.

    22LR being much easier to find than 22 short, it'd be handy to have the capability to shoot both even if you're only interested in the shorts right now.

    If you are looking for quiet, try 22 CB caps long, they are as long as 22 long rifle loads, but the velocity is about 750 fps. They will feed just like 22LR, but are much slower and are pretty quiet.

    I use CCI quiet rounds out of a rifle and it’s pretty quiet. I run that same round out of the suppressed rifle and its quieter than the clicking of a pen. .

    I disagree on length of . 22 long and ability to feed like a .22lr. The longs are a bit shorter and will not feed properly in a Ruger Mark pistol or 10\22 rifle. They will feed ok in a bolt action like the Ruger American rimfire.

    I have a German single shot 177 piston pellet rifle and a Ruger 10/22 converted to shoot only 22 short. The 10/22 is definitely louder...you don't need ear plugs. Buts it's plenty loud compared to the Beeman

    Yeah, they are just a fraction shorter. They will not stay in a Ruger MK mag. They will usually feed ok out of a BX25 in my 10/22 if I only load 8-10 rounds, and manually run the bolt.

    Pellet rifles are cheaper to get and run... and work well or most rodents.

    Good advice here on the Calibri. Rifles that feed short, long and long rifle that come to mind are;

    The browning BL-22
    Marlin 39A
    And if I recall correctly Winchester 190 semi auto

    Recently shot some CCI Segmented HP Quiet LR out of my Win 9422. Pretty darn quiet, and accurate. Comparing to my pellet pistol, I'd say it's a little louder, technically speaking. But realistically, it's about the same, just a different kind of crack, like sharper and quicker than the pellet gun's poooof, if that makes sense.
