    Just like the pioneers!
I spent a couple of decades out in the cold each season.
Either on the ground or in an open tree stand.

My very first day deer hunting was a disaster.
I had read "everything I needed to know" from hunting magazines of the day.
I washed all of my clothes and coveralls (insulated of course) in baking soda to eradicate smells.
I then moved to the cover scent.
The only thing that was available at the time locally was fox urine.

Wanting to be thorough, I doused my coveralls in fox urine and ram them through a neighborhood laundry dryer. (Yeah, bad idea)

I tossed the coveralls in a garbage bag overnight and off I went in the morning.
I got to my wooden tree stand well before sunrise, wreaking of fox urine.
I climbed up into the stand and sat down.

It got up to 70 degrees that afternoon and there I was, roasting in insulated coveralls and just about choking on the smell of fox urine
I left at dusk after seeing nothing all day.

I redeemed myself the next morning.
I rewashed the coveralls (different laundry mat) foregoing the cover scent.
Twenty minutes after legal shooting hour on day two I dropped my first deer.
    A respectable 9 pointer.

Congrats. That’s a dandy for a first buck . I don’t have much luck with bucks this time of the year. If I get one it’s usually in early archery before gun season. Seen 2 does this past eeekend and a lot of turkeys.

Season in Franklin county way down this year. Normally harvest totals over 2000 for season but only about 1300 this year. Lowest number in years. Blue tongue killed us. Hope it stays away and deer can recover somewhat for next year.

I think the low harvest number is partly due to DNR lowering antlerless quotas down to 1. I'm just south of Metamora and 100% agree the herd is down , especially mature deer. We found 11 dead this year and who knows how many we didn't.

On a typical year we take about 7 doe off my place. We started dialing back in recent years and just letting the kids take a doe . This year it's zero doe and will probably stay that way for at least a couple more years. Hopefully we don't have another outbreak next year .

    .
So foggy and wet here in the GSF you can't hear them or see them. Did hear a shot yesterday evening though.

Starting to fog back up here in Fountain county again.
It was clear, but overcast earlier.
Now it looks like it could get hard to see again pretty quick.

Watched a doe and fawn for a half hour. Too cute to shoot. Didn't think it would ever brighten up today. Sunrise just kind of happened reeeeeal slow.
