For your consideration is a very rare boxed set of transitional bar hammer revolvers. Maker is unknown, barrel and cylinder proofs are consistent with 1830-1840 era Birmingham England. No serial numbers, only writing is “Improved Revolver” on top of the barrel. I believe these are .44 caliber, shape of the bore makes it difficult to get an exact measurement. Each pistol is ornately hand engraved. I’m not a “finish judge” and will let you judge the finish for yourself. Both pistols function as they should, cylinders advance and lock up tight. This set comes with felt lined wooded box, inside the box is an oiler, cleaning rod, ball mold and empty percussion cap tin. The box lid is missing the left/right side trim, a few compartment lids and could use a cleaning.
For full disclosure, these pistols are not mine, these came out of a widow’s bedroom closet, found after her husband passed and she’s asked me to them. Unfortunately, both hammers have cracks, probably from kids dry firing them, but are stable, no wiggle/wobble. The only other issue is one pistol side plate screw broke deep in the threads and is held on by one thread, it stays on when handled. These issues can be addressed by a competent gunsmith but there are none up to the task near me.
I have spent many hours trying to track down the maker and I’m at a loss. I’ve found similar “Improved Revolvers” but none with this style cylinder, nor in a set like this. Price is $3,300 plus shipping/insurance if you’re outside the Indy, Kokomo, Lafayette area. The first “I’ll take it” has first rights as this is cross-posted, please follow up with PM. If you want any additional information/pictures, I am happy to provide them as I want the buyer to be happy with what appears to be a rare set of early revolvers. This set is cross-posted on another site (Gunboards) and will do my best to determine who responded first. Enjoy and thanks for looking.
