I’m not much a an elk hunting veteran with only 2 cows and 2 bulls to my credit, but I’ll throw another option at you for your first elk hunt. Find an outfitter that does a 2-3 day cow elk hunt where they have OTC cow tags. That will be much less expensive, and you can spend a couple days...

I’ll throw a vote in for Thunderbeast. Either a Dominus or an Ultra 7. Both will last you almost forever, and they’ll clean it for free once a year if you don’t want to mess with it. I’ve been using a Dominus on my 308, 300 WSM and 7 SAUM hunting rifles.
