      Your favorite Survival/Post-apoc/Disaster movies?

Saw it in the theatre last year and enjoyed it. I was surprised our local artsy granola theatre played it. Probably because it was foreign.

      1-day Bag?

If that's all he is carrying, a Camelbak would be better; it would hold more water and still have room for everything you listed. Once OP starts hiking any distance a single bottle of water isn't going to last long If you're planning on using it on yourself, have you practiced applying it one...

Guess I am not such an Idiot after all

No fuel problem here in my area. I too keep a bunch of 5 gallon cans since I can't have a bulk storage tank. After that pipeline burst I checked my cans and realized I'd slacked off on keeping all of them topped off. Sunoco is loving my card this month.....

      Did 9/11 change your prepping?

I think the only thing I added to the preps in the immediate aftermath was a respirator because I had none at that point and we were getting pulled in bits and pieces to go to the City and IIRC all they were providing people were those next to worthless paper face masks. So I ran to the hardware...

Winter Car Kit, for when you are stuck somewhere for a while.

Just because it's never happened doesn't mean that it can't happen to you

      Basements and Storage

To the top, or at least to the natural water table. If you're worried about the sump failing, invest in a trash pump. They're cheap insurance, and during flooding around here the fire departments can't keep up with the demand for their limited number of trash pumps

Winter Car Kit, for when you are stuck somewhere for a while.

I'd add more MREs; not like they'll go bad in the winter and you'll be stuck a while in a bad storm More chem lights I'd add more clothing like long underwear. Road flares. Kitty litter, pea gravel or some form of traction-adding material. I used to carry a bucket of ash from the local coal...

      ZIP-TOP BAGS

Years and years of using them in the field in the Guard, I found that most bags lost their integrity through rips and tears than the seal failing. They're cheapo enough that I would just stock up and plan on replacing them periodically

No plan - what's in the bug out bag?

Stuff like this is why I keep several duffle bags packed with some basic stuff in addition to a BOB. There's a packing list taped to the outside of each bag listing contents Grab and go. One less thing to worry about thinking through under stress. I suppose you could use totes or other...

Another example of why small groups in the single digits may be less successful in the long term

      Your favorite Survival/Post-apoc/Disaster movies?

How many of you watch foreign disaster flicks? or do the subtitles throw off your interest? This ones coming to our local artsy theatre next month. Given their usual movie selections, I can only assume they are showing this one because it's foreign language Cinemapolis.org | Coming Attractions

Questioning the Paradigms We Accept, Part II: Residential Construction

If it was a money is no object thing, I'd go with a post and beam structure. It's the closest thing we have to durable construction forms in residential housing. Most modern construction is depressingly inferior. It would be located in a rural area, at most a small village and not out in the...

WIC/Food stamps to stockpile food supply

In the eyes of many it's still expecting others to support your family that you should be supporting on your own or not having until you CAN support them on your own. Given the various tax breaks and additional funds paid to deployed military personnel, they still needed those funds while he was...

What do you do with your wood stove/fireplace ash?

n the garden or on the sidewalks if its fresh warm ash with a lot of unburnt clinkers and its an icey day

Cornell uses simulations to find the safest place to hide from zombie apocalypse

I disagree The researchers were sitting on their asses in the best place to defend against zombies.
