Just looks like breech marks to me. If no bulging at the base and the primers didn't flatten out, flow, or back out you should be fine.
Get pics of the fired brass with primer still in them and we can tell more.

Why the added hassle and expense of LiOn? They are relatively fragile (don't like a full state of charge long term), and highly flammable. Their main advantage over lead acid is weight. Deep cycle lead-acid batteries would be a better solution for stationary applications like this where...
That sucks. If he indeed had the correct/decent scanner tech tool, there are usually test functions to verify each solenoid valve in the HCU is working so they can be sequentially blead and tested.
