Why Was Hip Shooting Ever a Thing?

I imagine that any consistent body position, if practiced enough, could be used to shoot relatively accurately inside 10 yards. Mileage will vary based on the shooter's bodily awareness. I bet most of you well-practiced sighted shooter's can look right over the gun at the target and make...

      First Personal Gun Training

I haven't kept up with who is teaching what, but some things you should probably understand before carrying might be: The legal aspect of using force in self defense. The legal aspects of carrying the gun generally. The fundamentals of marksmanship and some proficiency with them. And most...

Foot Sweeps and Trips for Self Defense (AKA In The Streets)?

It looks like a perfectly applicable comment to me. Being skilled and being fit are not mutually exclusive, and both are important. If you want to maximize your odds, you'll spend plenty of time on both. People who are getting paid to fight certainly do. There are plenty of scenarios where size...

If you need someone to work through the material with, you can shoot me a message. I could probably find some time on a weekend.

      ACE VR shooting

My GFs Son has an Oculus something-or-other VR headset. I don't know any of the details. I need to do some research. It if it would work I might have to get in on this.

Foot Sweeps and Trips for Self Defense (AKA In The Streets)?

More quickly than I would like. Definitely more quickly than I used to. I don't know if it's age, or having had Covid, or just not being in as good a shape. Whatever it is, or maybe combination of things, I am not in the condition I used to be.

      ACE VR shooting

I would guess that, if your eyes are well trained, most pistols are similar enough that its not as big a factor moving form pistol to pistol. I would think the difference between two real pistols might not be as big as a real pistol vs a sensor that relates that position to a screen strapped...

Foot Sweeps and Trips for Self Defense (AKA In The Streets)?

Being strong and physically fit is a significant factor, and not one that is focused on enough on forums like this. It's something I fail at more than succeed. It's probably the place I could get the most benefit if I focused the time on it. Moreso than learning foot sweeps, to be honest.

      ACE VR shooting

Does the virtual sight picture that you see on the screen match up with the "muscle memory" position of your actual gun when you draw or press out to the target? I think you're probably mostly training your ability to visually drive your sights or dot to the target with this thing, but...

Situational Awareness, the be all end all?

My girlfriend and I were in Dallas in December. One evening we decided to walk from our hotel to Reunion Tower. It was maybe 6 or 8 blocks. It wasn't late, but it was Winter, so it was dark. I didn't know the area well or which streets were safe, and which weren't. On our way we passed by an...

Situational Awareness, the be all end all?

He could have summarized all four articles together with: "Situational awareness is not just about seeing what’s going on; it’s also about interpreting that information and what to do about it." I guess I thought this was fairly obvious. "Situational awareness" is just a fancy term for looking...

Foot Sweeps and Trips for Self Defense (AKA In The Streets)?

I haven't seen what they teach except on YouTube. They are big advocates of finishing the fight on the ground. I believe they like to get a body lock or clinch and use an outside trip or get to the back and pull them down in a valley drop type of movement. These are probably easier to teach...

Foot Sweeps and Trips for Self Defense (AKA In The Streets)?

When done well it is very disconcerting. It feels like the floor disappeared and you just fall. Yes to both. It is a relatively high skill move and most of that skill is recognizing/feeling the timing of the foot movement and being in the position to take advantage. You can also make people...

Foot Sweeps and Trips for Self Defense (AKA In The Streets)?

I don't know if this will be of much interest to people. This post is mostly aimed at the recreational grapplers who are also interested in the ability to apply their skills in a self-defense context. Basically, I've been shifting my focus to foot sweeps and trips as my primary takedown...

What drills did you run this week and how did you do?

I'm feeling inspired reading through all the work you guys have put in here. I haven't been to the range in... Way too long. A couple of years. I need to get back to regular practice but I feel like I'll be starting over. Tonight I drilled takedowns from the Russian tie.
