I am relatively new to guns in general and don’t have the sort of money that would mean I can just buy a gun without testing to make sure I enjoy shooting it. Does anyone know of any place that allows people to test guns before purchasing within about 50 miles of Auburn? Do these kinds of places exist anywhere?

Call around to nearby gun stores with ranges. Many have dedicated rentals. That will get you the chance to try various guns. If you know what guns you are considering to purchase, make sure they have one of each on the rental wall.

Typically the only requirement is you must also buy ammo from them.

Also ask how the rentals work. You want a range that will allow you to switch out during the rental period, which most will do. Be upfront and let them know that you are trying to figure out what you want to buy. Its a fairly common thing.

And it probably wouldnt hurt to pay for an instructor's time. They can assist you and give you some instruction to improve your skills at the same time.

There's a fancy new range in Ft. Wayne called Midwest Shooting Center, IIRC, and also a Range USA that just opened in Mishawaka. Neither of these places are my favorite type of gun shop, nor my favorite kind of place to shoot, but they both have what you're looking for. You can rent a variety of guns at either place, and probably find some classes and instruction as well. Freedom Firearms in Ft. Wayne also has a range, and I assume they offer rentals. I've never shot at any of these places so I can't really offer an endorsement of any one over the others.

Your two best options have already been mentioned:
-MWSC, RangeUSA, or similar that set up programs to do exactly what you want
-private club and hope for some generous and helpful members willing to let you try their collection.

Hillside Shooting Sports in Roanoke has a fantastic indoor shooting range with a rental counter. I’m a frequent flier there and always enjoy myself when I go. I don’t rent so I’ve no clue as to the cost of their rentals.
When you’re done renting and shooting you can go upstairs and browse the selection of sidearms they have. Chris, Hunter, Jack, Greg and Judy are good people.

Just FYI that some Range USAs won't rent a gun to your if it's your first time. IDK how much this policy is enforced, but that's what's on paper. I happen to like the Range USA in Indy quite a bit, but ymmv

Not 50 miles, bout 2 hrs. drive south west. But what do you want to try? Mite have gun and ammo, my range, no cost for an INGO member. Depending on firearm of choice. And of course your desire to shot. :dunno: If I have what you are looking at/for say the word. I’m assuming hand gun. No rifles to new folks, sorry.

From my experiences most ranges rent firearms to test out. You can always narrow down your search by handling multiple ones prior to going and see what feels beat to your hand and grip.

If I am not mistaken, they will rent to you on you first visit if you bring a friend. Think the concern is a suicide. Not sure what the other person is supposed to do, but what is the way I read the policy.

2 hours drive is a bit much for me. Thanks for the offer though.

if the OP calls ahead and schedules an hour session with an instructor it should be kosher. Just let them know why and that you would like some instruction and to try various guns on your quest to find the right gun they should happily rent to you in order to help you decide. (and hope you buy from them)

I'm not sure about up here in Indiana, But I noticed at a gun shop with a range down in Nashville Tn, they would let people try out used guns if they were interested in buying.
