This project all started with the desire to utilize all the assorted unused AR parts in my collection. So I looked at what I had and decided I should do a non serious build, just for fun. Looking at what I had, I decided it would be possible to do sort of a modern take on the Colt 605. This lead me down the road of learning a lot about this carbine’s history.

For those who don’t know, the 605 was an early attempt to shorten the M16. They cut the barrel to 15 inches, right in front of the block. This lead to reliability issues and they only really ran right when you had a suppressor on the end. Modern variants have fixed this but the original 605 was short lived. Some years later I believe Bushmaster was the one who coined the term “Dissipator”. Which never really made sense to me.

Again, this being a just for fun build, I went down the rabbit hole of what I thought a “Dissipator” should be.

If it’s meant to dissipate then that means it’s supposed to make a lot of heat, which means it’s supposed to be a support weapon, not an infantry rifle. And the shortened barrel means that it’s got room for a suppressor. So by my logic the Dissipator is supposed to be a suppressed, automatic rifle for squad support. Okay, I got just the parts for that.

I had most of what I needed minus the receiver and a couple small parts. I ordered an Anderson non forward assist upper to keep the retro theme. Although I wanted to do a fixed carry handle, just couldn’t justify the cost. Then assembled and put it on my existing Mk 12ish clone lower.

Seeing how I’m don’t own a suppressor :dunno:…I installed this 5.5 inch flash hider as a stand in. Sort of a retro touch like the old XM177 rifles.

OD green duct taped jungle mags of course, because it’s a support weapon.

Some of you may have seen my post about converting a virgin FSGB to set screws…
Well this is where it went.

Underneath it’s just a 16 inch carbine gas barrel. My FSGB is just to hold the hand guard on really. The bipod set up is a custom fab of mine. It’s just high friction that holds the legs, then pinned in place. They are firm but smooth.

Here you can see the carbine length tube inside the rifle length hand guard.

50 yard aperture sight shooting with M193 ish ammo.

Overall this was a fun build and a good use of cool parts that would have otherwise been forgotten about. The whole build is a blend of old and new giving it a unique look. Picking it up it really feels like the M16s we used to have on the ship, just a bit heavier.

If anyone wants a complete list feel free to PM me and I can get you the info on how I did it and what I used.

I’ve got to be wrong! There’s no way the white guy in the second photo is II Field Force, 1st. Logistical Command. In Long Binh. Photo is kinda fuzzy, but from a distance thats what it looks like to my old eyes. Is that even possible???
