Kind of a long story, so follow along...

A few years back, I decided there was a good deal on some firearms at PSA. Having a FFL, I advised some of my friends of the deal, ordered a few, and did the background checks here in the shop. Apparently, that put me on PSA's "preferred FFL" list. Now, I DON'T DO FFL TRANSFERS. I hate the hassle of them, don't care to do them. My shop, my choice. But, I will help out a close friend or brother on certain deals.

Flash forward a couple years and a firearm shows up on my porch. Weird...I don't remember ordering anything...I opened up the package and there was a firearm in there from PSA. The person who bought it never called, contacted, etc., and was not one of my customers. I called PSA, advised them of the situation. That's when they advised me I was on their "preferred FFL" list. I advised them that I only do gunsmithing, and to remove me from said list. They obliged, and sent me a return label for the firearm in question.

Flash forward to June 15th of this year. A firearm shows up on my doorstep. Weird...I don't remember ordering anything...again...I opened up the package and there was a firearm in there from PSA....again. The person who bought it never called, contacted, etc., and was not one of my customers....again. I called PSA, advised them of the situation...again. That's when they advised me I was on their "preferred FFL" list....again. I told the gentleman that was NOT the case, and that I don't do FFL transfers. He apologized, sent me a RMA, and stated he would remove me from the list, and that UPS would pick up the firearm. Ok...great!

June 23rd, firearm is still not picked up. I called PSA and advised them of the situation. They told me they "don't do pick ups" because of their "contract with UPS." Strange, that's not what the guy told me on the 15th. So what do you want me to do? "You would need to deliver that package to a hub." Um...no. This is not my problem. YOU did not remove me from the list, YOUR customer never called, messaged, emailed, smoke signaled ASKING for a transfer...so no. NOT my problem. Lady on the phone says, "Well my supervisor says..." I said, let me speak with the supervisor. "I'm sorry, sir. We don't do that. I can send a ticket and he might call you back." Might?!? Needless to say, I was not very pleasant with lady, as it was very clear she did not care what was going on, nor was going to do anything to help. So I hung up, and called back.

June 23rd, second call. Spoke to lady named Myrah. She stated the information I was given previously was INCORRECT, and they would schedule the pick up for me. Great! She said, "I understand your frustration, and I'm very sorry for the hassle. Your time is valuable, and I can only imagine how frustrating this can be." Thank you...so when will they pick it up? "If they don't pick it up today, they will pick it up tomorrow (Friday) or (Saturday)." Ok...thank you!

June 27th firearm is still not picked up. I called PSA at 0900 when they open. The answering service said they are answering calls in 1 min 30 sec. 13 minutes later, half asleep woman answers the phone. I advised, again, of the situation. She said, "ok let me get message my supervisor of the situation." Ok. 27 minutes later (I timed it), I said, "Are you still there?!?" She said, "Yeah, I'm just waiting on a response from my supervisor." I said, ok, well, I have things/work to do, what's the issue here? Her response, "Well we don't do pick ups. So I need to have the supervisor tell me what to do." Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot. Ok....deep breath...."Ma'am....I was just told on the 23rd by Myrah that was not the case and that I should expect a pick up." Her response, "Well I don't see that." Um.........wut?!? "Yeah, I don't see that." Are there any notes about this?!? "Nope. The supervisor should be calling you at some point, but I'm not sure when."

So, here we are almost two weeks later, still no pick up.

Now, COULD I drive 35 min one way to drop off the gun at a hub? Yes. But, fuel is $5/gallon, my time is $50/hour in the shop, and quite frankly, NOT MY FAULT. I can't send the bill to the purchaser of the firearm...I'd never get the money. I can't send the bill to PSA....I'd never get the money. So basically, I'm stuck.

    What say you INGO?

What would YOU do in this situation???

Do you have a process/policy for unclaimed merchandise, like someone drops off something for you to work on, then ghosts you and never comes to pick it up? I don't know how often gunsmiths would run into this, but a lot of places, in particular computer repair shops, or so I've heard, run into it often, so they have a policy where if someone doesn't pick up in a certain time frame, like 30 days, they can claim the item as their own and put it in inventory, and my understanding is that the law backs them up on this.

If there's anything similar for gunsmiths, I'd think it would apply here. In that case, I would notify PSA in writing that they have 30 days to come an get their gun (or have it picked up) or it will be counted as unclaimed merchandise, and become yours.

Hang on to the item until whomever purchased it starts complaining to PSA. When they start making noise about requesting a refund, maybe that will light a fire under PSA's butts.

Wait, I just thought of another aspect to this. The fact that they put you on their list without any permission or communication from you, and that the buyer of the gun from PSA never contacted you, means that they have no way of knowing what your FFL transfer fee is. What if you called the guy who ordered the gun and said, "Oh, hi. Your gun is ready for pickup. You do remember that our FFL transfer fee is $1,000, right? Oh no? You didn't check on that ahead of time? You don't want to do the transfer with us any more? Well, you'd better contact PSA and have them pick up the gun so they can re-ship it to a different FFL for you. Have a nice day!"

It seems odd that after all this time the purchaser hasn't tried to contact the OP or apparently hasn't done anything with PSA. I'm sure they must've been notified by email that their item was shipped and delivered and the money they paid for the item has been deducted from their bank account.

Given the fact that they picked an FFL that they didn't make the slightest effort to contact first, or even verify the transfer fee, I think we're dealing with someone who is not very tech savvy, doesn't understand the process of ordering firearms online, is not very attentive regarding their purchases, or some combination of all three.

Plus, I know some folks who only created an email account so they could place online orders. They never check their email, and sometimes can go a month or so before wondering why something they ordered hasn't showed up yet.

You would think that they would at least check their email to track the status of their purchases. Especially if it's a firearm.

@Squirt239 - you got yourself on their list, sorry you can't get off of it. Some sites just search for FFLs by location , so you might end up showing up on lists at other sites as long as you have your FFL.

If you have a web presence make sure it indicates that you don't do transfers and that any items shipped to you will become your property

A $500 or more transfer fee will certainly discourage others from doing this.

Regarding "signature required" shipments handled by UPS. In my area the drivers have discretion to leave the item if they deem the area "safe". Since COVID, I've been asked for a signature once out of a dozen or so shipments that supposedly required them, most of the time they don't even ring my bell.

When I know I won't be home for expensive items I request a hold at my local UPS store so that they don't sit on my porch.

Yes, I'm sure the folks I know like would be more diligent if the item they were ordering online were a firearm. But there's always some moron out there who'll surprise you...

    Fun fact, no....

They do not require signature. At least not the last 2 deliveries as they were left in front of the shop without signature
I haven't ordered anything from PSA in a long time but I'm remembering a time I think that they required a signature even for non FFL items such as an AR complete upper delivered to a residence. I must admit that IDK what their policy was for delivering an FFL item to a dealer because I've never had an FFL.
