So, broke out the M1 to share with a bunch of Scouts and Scout Leaders this past weekend. First person up runs a clip through with no issues. No other immediate takers, so the first person starts in on another clip. He gets to the 7th round (15th overall), and he feels the stock push out against his trigger hand and then a sharp pain. He thinks his finger is broken. All that happened is that his hand got pinched between the broken stock.

Broken stock you wonder. How does an M1 stock break while firing? Well, you live and learn ... we all lived (only casualty was the rifle) and learned that Turkish surplus is some bad juju (MKE headstamp).

Working with the CMP to get the rifle repaired. Here's some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

    The culprit.

Only found 13 of the 14 cartridges that were fired before the split case. Here's what they look like.

Anybody know if I can pull the bullets on the remaining cartridges add some new powder and have safe rounds to shoot?

Seeing things go wrong can be as good or better of a lesson than seeing everything go right! Glad no one was injured and I hope it gets repaired quickly. And I see no reason you couldn't pull and reload. Maybe pop those primers as well.

As a reloader, I don't see a problem with you pulling out the projectiles and popping out the primers. Then cleaning the brass and loading it with a new primer and fresh powder.

Glad to hear that no one was seriously hurt.

What would be the reason to replace the primer?

I'm glad the shooter didn't have lasting injuries. The only thing we ever did was to delink some black tip machinegun ammo for newbies to hurt themselves. Of course we would show them manual of arms with a standard load first then hand it over for the first victim. Did this with the M1 and M14. What a hoot with that metal butt plate.

Primer could be corrosive. Not sure if Turkish is or not. My inclination is that it is. But hey, it's up to you to decide if it's worth it to replace the primer. You could always keep the Turkish ones for a rainy day. Or shoot them in a less awesome rifle.

20+ years ago Chesterfields VFW did a ceremony and they used granade blanks with regular blank adapters installed. With two rifles stocks, stainless gas system and the ends of the barrels were destroyed.

My feeling is the brass was defective. The primer of the split brass doesn't look that flattened. Which reminds me I've got a couple hundred Korean 30.06 marked KA (corrosive) that I need to deal with. Because that ain't going through my M1.

With that split in the case and the gray ring, I wonder if it fired out of battery.

A quick web search yields a few hits for that ammo kabooming. Questionable brass maybe?
This batch of Turkish 30-06 showing up on sale was almost immediately followed by a whole gush of posts about blown up M1s.

People were warned by others who had experience with Turkish ammo. They didn't want to listen.

Interesting, did it mention the importer or if atf got involved?
