This is a future project, maybe. Just at the information collection stage now and don;t know if this will be a reality.

I am considering building a 10/22 clone from scratch.

Rather than customizing a stock 10/22 I want to see what I can come up with trying to get all of the parts I want and building it.

I know that I would never recover the costs of building this, it's more for the experience and to be able to say that's my rifle, it's the only one that's just like it because I built it.

It would be for Steel Challenge. Needs to light.

I was thinking of starting with this:

    Ideas and suggestions?

Lowest cost with greatest return in utility should be considered. Think value added.

I think you'll save your weight in the barrel and stock. They make some lightweight receivers but they are spendy.

Brownells has a railed receiver for $80. Then spend the money on a good carbon barrel and lightweight stock.

That would be lightweight, not being able to extend your support hand may be an issue.

I know of a few that run the Taccom ULW chassis, allows the support hand to be further out.

A while back I put together a really great M1 carbine clone from E Arthur Brown.

Thing is super fun. Feels much different than a normal 10/22 to me.

They also offer a P90 kit that looks like fun.

They offer way more 10/22 parts than this. Worth checking out

Not sure how much fabricating that you want to do vs. assembling, but here are a few threads that might help in your quest.

There's a whole lot more if you look (sometimes pretty deep) in the other forums. Seems 10/22's are discussed on a regular basis on this web site ... go figure.

If you haven't already done so, it's worth visiting Rimfire Central ( https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ ). Those cats really get into the nitty gritty of all things rimfire.

This. RFC has forgotten more about 10/22 builds than we'll ever manage to know.

    :+1:

I am relatively new to the 22 game (except my 10/22 that I got in 1978) and I have to say that Kidd has been outstanding for me. I won't say better, but I will say, I have been more impressed with Kidd over the Tac-Sol and VQ stuff.

I have my take off barrel from my 10/22 build. That P90 might be fun since I already have one component. Just need to find a receiver group...

I am also active at Rimfire central.

Kidd seems to be the "gold standard".

    Thanks for all the replies.
I followed a "sticky" there when I bedded my 10/22 stock and added a pillar.

I have a Kidd trigger group in mine and really like it. My Brimstone was a total bust.

Kidd Supergrade is my recommendation. Just pick your favorite stock and be done. You'll get an excellent barrel, superior bolt, arguably the best 10/22 trigger out there, and the best fit-and-finish you'll find.

The Supergrade barrel has a longer tenon that fits inside the receiver, which provides better stability and no barrel sag. It also allows you to "quick-change" the barrel, so that you can maximize your investment.

I've got Supergrades in wood stocks, Magpul stocks, and the Kidd aluminum chassis. Determine the purpose for the rifle before choosing stock, barrel length/style, trigger pull weight, and optic.
