Hello All, I’ve inherited a Remington 722 with a .244 barrel. I am not sure of the exact year. I’ve read accounts of this rifle’s accuracy and smooth bolt action. I am really looking forward to trying it out but the correct ammunition seems hard to come by. I’ve read that 6mm rounds can safely be used. However, much of the available ammunition cannot be put in the magazine as current 6mm rounds are too long To the fed through the magazine. Additionally, much of the Winchester .233 rounds will work by feeding them individually into the breach but will tumble when fired and will not be accurate at all. With the price of ammo that hardly seems worthwhile. Also, the available rounds that I can find have too much gunpowder (from what I‘ve read) and will cause further problems with accuracy. Is there any hope for finding suitable ammo? The 722 also has a beautiful tooled leather case that I’ll take a picture of later.
I also inherited a Remington Model 29. After having the shot gun certified safe to shoot by a local gun smith I gave it a try. It was actually the first shot gun I’ve ever shot as all my previous experience has been with handguns.
Just for the fun of it I’ve included pictures of an 1873 Springfield that I did not inherit but was pretty fun to check out. It’s a shame really because the Springfield was immediately sold for profit by other family members and I would have loved to keep it in the family.
I was also given two of Senator Yager’s hunting knives but this is a gun forum so I didn’t post pictures of them.

Nice rifle! The 6mm Remington cartridge has a heavier bullet than the twist in the .244 can stabilize in most factory loadings. A little internet research on the. 244 should get you the info of what bullet weight you need to look for in 6mm Remington.
Hope you get a lot of enjoyment from your new rifle!

It'll probably shoot 75 gran bullets just fine. Find someone knowledgeable who will help you reload for it. You can start with empty cases (did any cases or ammo come with the gun?) or you can purchase new ammo and pull the bullets, then reload with a desired powder/bullet combination that will be safe and accurate. The 722 is a great action, the scope that is mounted on it looks pretty old and may be valuable to the right person.

The 244 Remington and 6mm Remington are the the rounds that we should all be shooting instead of 243 Winchester, but Remington messed up when they introduced the 244 by giving it a slow twist, made more for varmint weight bullets. The 243 Win is a great round, but if you want more velocity and potential for better accuracy with the longer case neck the 244/6mm have an advantage. I was talked out of building a 243 on an old Mauser VZ-24 by George Perkins back in the late 90's, because he sold me on the potential of a 6mm Remington.
