Did it close during the pandemic? I drove up through that way the other day for the first time in awhile and did not see it.

I really haven't paid attention. We went there shortly after they opened. Food was ok but nothing special. But the atmosphere was not to our liking. Haven't been back.

I wonder if Mission BBQ opening next door had anything to do with it.

Portillo's is just OK food, often crowded and no longer is family owned. I am speaking of the locations in NW Indiana, Chicago area as far as quality. Most local hot dog/gyro type joints will match their quality at lower prices.

It started as a hot dog stand and now has extreme overhead in fancy buildings. When they build a new site they buy the land and then lease it back to a franchisee.

Thanks. I must have missed it then.
As an aside, in my teenage years, the Putt-Putt that's there on North Main and the United Skates of America were my frequent date locals. There were really no restaurants there then- you had to go to Grape Road or McKinley.

We have a Portillos now but I haven't been there. Between looking at their menu, and the reviews I've read both here and on Yelp and other places, it's unlikely I ever will go there.

Place is not bad, but not all it is made out to be.

Greek Tony's in Carmel has dipped Italian Beef tops it by a long shot.

I really like their Italian beef and their desserts. Hate the atmosphere. Hard, uncomfortable seating, loud, lots of commotion, horrible acoustics. Sort of frantic free-for-all at the pickup window.

Westfield is getting one next. We do the plumbing and HVAC on them so we always have a heads up on where they are going next...
Some of the office folks like their food. I’m not a fan. Seems overpriced for what it is.

When we would work out your direction we would always go to Zel's over Portillos for beef sandwiches. Haven't been to one in probably 5 years though.

Apparently me and Marvin think the same. Lol

    OMG
i would love White castle in Fort Wayne
I liken White Castle to Coor's beer. I remember when Coor's wasn't available east of the Mississippi and had friends that would drive to St. Louis just to bring home cases of Coor's. Oddly enough, Stroh's wasn't available out west and people out there thought it was great and would do the same to get it. In reality, both were pretty crappy beers.

The people out west thought (knew) that Coor's was crap, and the people back here thought (knew) that Stroh's was crap, but since they were "forbidden fruit" so to speak for each, they had their own following in places where they weren't available. I would gladly give you one of our White Castles. :):
