Uh, around here, the Tribal Police are about as tribal as Lizzy Warren.

They are typically draw from the ranks of local PDs. Many of whom have their 20 years in, aren't ready to retire, want a nice raise, and better working conditions.;)

I know a State Trooper who did this years ago and a South Bend PD guy who just became tribal police in advance of the new casino opening.

All cops are the same, haven't you heard?

Sure wish I had archived news coverage from back when the Pokagon Band was seeking Federal recognition; IIRC at the time they went to great length publicly stressing it wasn't to build casinos and now were on what, their fourth location?

He linked to a post that cited this article:

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/pokagon-band-potawatomi-indians-receives-182243825.html

...which gives more details about how the land was acquired.

Interestingly, that particular article does not specifically mention the casino, but that's the land. As I understand it, a casino was kinda the main reason for acquiring the land to begin with.

I've read it a couple of times. when first posted and again just now. Seems to talk about 166 acres being placed in trust, but not how the Tribe acquired it. As I said upstream, Im speculating they must have purchased the land - don't know of any give-away by SB or Indiana. But maybe there was.

Sort of like when the state politicians promised all of us that if we would vote for the lottery that it would not legalize other forms of gambling.

When I worked for Brink's, Pokagon let us carry on their land. Now that I'm a police officer, I cannot carry on their land. Only Pokagon Tribal Police, Saint Joseph County Police, and Brink's can carry firearms into the new casino in South Bend. Not even the South Bend Police Department is authorized to carry weapons in the casino, even on duty.

Funny how so many places that prohibit guns have armed men transport their money...
