I'd say just borrow a rifle from an instructor the first time you go. All the instructors I've seen have loaner rifles and are happy to let people use them.
One more thing: Don't be afraid to tell the clerk that you don't know much about handguns. They will probably be more helpful if they know that you don't have much experience.

I'll just lump in here to say that putting the DCAEK and RAM in my M&P9 made a HUGE improvement in the handling of the pistol, along with much better accuracy. And it was easy to do myself.
