My wife is a school bus driver, last week she reported 36 times when vehicles would drive past her bus with the red flashing lights on and STOP arm engaged. She said one driver was behind her, she turned on her lights, stopped the bus and children started boarding her bus when the car flew around her bus in the opposite lane. She told me that next year police will be closely following school buses looking for offenders. Some school districts are lobbying to get passed into law automatic license suspension for violations.

I don’t understand why you can’t pass a stop arm since all kids are picked up on the correct side of the road now? I understand when kids were crossing but they don’t do that anymore. Not saying you should do it but not understanding why you can’t?

Because the younger the kid, the less predictable their behavior is.

Also, some places, kids still cross. One rule, one behavior to learn.
Gotcha that makes some sense. But I would say if a kid is so young you don’t know that they will get on the bus instead of darting into the road they were probably too young to stand by the road alone?

Picked up maybe, but what about kids being dropped off? Not all will live on the side of the road that the bus stop is on.

How about when it say stop, you just ****in stop?
If one of my grandkids were to get hit because someone went around a stopped bus with the arm out and red lights going, I would do everything in my power to ruin that person's life

My mother warned me decades ago, when I first started driving, to watch out for school buses.
HER very first ticket was for passing a stopped school bus. That was about 65 years ago.

Given my respect for school buses on the road, it seems the "automatic" enforcement doesn't allow for due process.

In my 10 years of driving a bus everyday someone would pass.

One stopped for my stop arm, waited 10 seconds or so then proceeded to take off. She didn't look in her mirror until she noticed red and blues behind her.

That officer's car had so many lights unlike any I had seen before I can't believe how long it took for her to pull over.

She should have known better. This particular stop is on Shortridge rd, directly across from the old eastgate mall.

Not sure suspending a license will do any good. Unless the car is towed they will keep driving.

By me they are picked up and dropped off on their side of the road. It’s policy.

Eaaaasy ….. like I said I wasn’t saying go around just pointing out by me it is a pretty stupid law since no one crosses a road to get on a bus.

Another thing to watch for is the kid that gets off the bus and bolts across the road (or out into the road on the same side) to get the mail. I cannot believe that "parents" let their kids do this.

In France our school buses don't have that sign, no law keeps me from going around them when they stop.
I just do it anyway because it's the safest thing to do, it's taught driving school even though it's not a law, or rule.

When they stop to pick up, or to drop kids, they put their hazard lights on.

I just wait behind while they load and unload kids.
I can wait 20 seconds. :dunno:
If I need to pass a school bus I will do it while they are moving ... when I know there's no kids who could possibly cross in front of the bus.

Kids doing dumb stuff is recognized in the law. It's what they do. What's more, a parent being present doesn't necessarily prevent what can happen in seconds.

When the consequences are dire, a little inconvenience to prevent a death seems worth it. Sure, it would be a kid's "fault" in many circumstances...but so what? The death penalty seems out of proportion with a kid forgetting or ignoring even simple safety rules.

As for "automatic" anything, no one is talking about end-running "due process of law" on this. They are talking about mandatory minimum penalties if a person is found guilty.

Wife works for a school and is admin to the buses.

I am pretty sure they drop off on the door side only for state roads. County and city is a free for all.

Her little school has cameras on the stop arms and the resource officer goes after the violators. Tickets do not seem to be enough, but at least it is a step in the right direction.

They could put those car lasso thingies, that some cop car uses, in front of the school bus.

Not that chasing a car with a bus full of kids would be the safest thingy to do of course.

    Or automatic spike strips.
It could be deployed then the stop sign is deployed, same button.
And they shoot from under the bus.

news report this morning mentioned that people were going around the bus on the right, through ditches and shoulders, the side where kids would be boarding.

If you are too important to wait 30-seconds to a minute for kids to get on a bus, you shouldnt be driving

I started riding on the school bus in 1964. Been driving a car since 1974. Cars stopping for a school bus at passenger stops has been always from my perspective. Part of life, I refuse to let it upset me.

It is widely published when school is in session and when it is not. If stopping for a school bus adds 10 minutes to your commute, leave 15 minutes early. Sometimes that gets you down the road before the buses get there. Either way you can save a lot of stress.

It is hard to believe, but whatever we want to post on Indianagunowners.com before work will usually wait until after work. <grin>

OT- I don't know if the spokesman for the school in that report was a a principal, but he is dressed just like every principal I had in the '70s and '80s.
