The 88 is a great shotgun. They basically took the 500, figured out how inexpensive they could make it, and came up with the 88. But somehow the various changes they made were not critical parts and it still works great. That doesnt happen often.

If I didnt have multiple 500s (through inheritance) I'd consider an 88.

Check out the new Beretta A300 Patrol... its getting to where I can't recommend a pump anymore. The semi auto Beretta works so well, and reduces recoil..

I’m sure you are right, but they are more expensive.

Of all of the pumps that Mossberg offers, I think the Maverick 88 is the only one I DON'T have.
If I didn't have the others I'd be looking at an 88.

I really appreciate all of your feedback. Now I’m giving a second thought to a pistol grip for sure. Also, I’ve been considering the 88’s, just wasn’t sure if they were decent quality? I’m sure I will upgrade eventually. ;) Whatever it ends up being, it will definitely be shorter, probably an 18 inch or so. And the only reason I’ve been set on on a 20 gauge is because that’s what has been suggested to me a few times at local shops.

They look like they would be hard to manage.
Oh dear God they are. Ive fired less than 3 rounds using one of those style pistol grips. (I was 16-18 and dad bought it) He fired a couple rounds and agreed with me and we put it away never to be fired again. After I inherited it, the first thing I did was remove it, throw it away, and buy a new stock for it. LOL

Get some time behind a 12GA. With proper training you'll have no trouble handling it. But you may prefer a 20. An "expert" punting and assuming you can only handle a 20 just by looking at you is lazy.

that's going to be hard to beat.

    $234

Here's the one I'm interested in.
My gunsmith said he can thread it for chokes, and put a picatinny rail on it for a RDS for me.
He has to check the barrel to make sure it is thick enough first though.

You guys are awesome! And so helpful!!!
Just go to online gun stores look up Mossberg Maverick 88's and look at the reviews from actual customers go to as many as you want to read about. Then go to youtube and watch reviews.
I do this a lot when I'm researching a firearm I'm interested in. Then I come here and ask.
These guys will give you a lot of information and feedback on a majority of firearms good or bad.
