I returned to Indiana this last week for a family visit, my first time back in about a year.

Stopped by my county Sheriff's office to surrender my Indiana lifetime carry permit. The lady working behind the glass (civilian, I assume) said that she didn't think what I was wanting to do was a "thing", so she called ISP and she told me they said, " just to keep it in case I ever moved back".

Back at the hotel room, I called ISP because I didn't think what she told me was a "thing", and I was half right.
ISP asked a couple basic questions (name, old county of residence, ect) and gave me a reference #. I was instructed to go to ISP's website, follow the prompts, use the given reference # and change to my current Tennessee address. Then I could keep it to avoid paying again if I ever moved back.........................or I could mail it to them to surrender.

This is what I get for trying to do what I thought was proper. Leave it to Indiana to make giving a gun permit back more difficult than getting one.

FYI, I drove right past the ISP post on 21st St. headed home, and no, they told me I couldn't just drop it off........................now, where did I leave those scissors?

This was covered several years ago, you have to be a resident (with a couple of exceptions) to get a LTCH, not to keep one. Just do the change of address on the website.

Why? I am not sure the purpose of this. We do not need a LICENSE in the state of indiana to carry a firearm. Nor do non-residents. This just sounds petty to me.
Nope we don't in IN, but other states do and I don't know if any of those states recognize a IN ltch and not one from his current home state so it may have value in the future if he travels. What is petty about it? File the change of address and go on with life.

    Just to be clear.

    I'm not an Indiana resident.

Per ISP, the PERMIT doesn't allow me to legally carry a firearm in Indiana and other than moving back to Indiana AND establishing residency, is 100% invalid.

I may be wrong, but I believe I need a Tennessee Gun Permit to carry legally in Indiana.

Indiana has never had a permit.
Constitutional carry was passed and became active July 1, 2022 meaning that residents and non-residents may carry a firearm in any fashion as long as they are not a prohibited person. You do not need a license from any state to carry in Indiana.

Indiana has Constitutional carry now, no permit/license needed from anywhere to carry here.

I'll see if I can find the old threads about this. The basics IIRC was somebody at the ISP firearm division decided that since non-residents can't generally get a LTCH that people who held one and moved out of state their license should be "put on hold", some hubbub ensued and the Supt said nope there is nothing in the IC to allow for that. Just file change of address and it remains valid. Now if your current state required a license/permit for residents to carry it may not be valid in that state, but for other states that had reciprocity it would.

Here is one of the threads where it's been discussed.

And another. There are quite a few.

I stand corrected, not a permit, a LTCH.
And thank you for the additional info.

Just regurgitating what ISP told me. I don't need it, I don't want it, that's why I tried surrendering it and now I'll try my hand at Origami with it.

Thanks for the additional info, helps for future visits.

what's bad is a lot of people turn to local LEO and state to answer these questions and the vast majority have no idea what the ACTUAL law states. They go off of rumor and ideas and run with it. People repeat what they were told by what they thought would be a knowledgable place/person and that's how bad information gains traction.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I would fill out the change of address and stop worrying about it.

I don't know if any states recognize the IN ltch that don't recognize TN lic/permit but if so that might be a reason to keep it.

Yep. It takes a couple of minutes to do it online. Probably less time than filling out the address on an envelope and mailing it back with a letter that he wants to surrender it.

This came up a while back. The lifetime LTCH DOES NOT become invalid because you change your State of residence. That was the word from an ISP lawyer, passed along by Guy Reford.

You aren't an Indiana resident, you can't use it as a LTCH, but if you move back/become Indiana resident again it's still valid.

Don't get me wrong, that is illogical as all get out to me. But if it's good enough for ISP, it's good enough for me.

Took the advise given and went online to ISP's website, created account, used reference number as instructed, long story short, they want $20 to change my address, lol.

That pink POS 'bout bogged down my paper shredder.

You only have to pay $20 to get a replacement card. The replacement card is NOT required to tell the state you've moved. I don't know why you have all this angst about your LTCH. Do you realize that the lifetime LTCH is still on the state's record and still in effect. But now, you will have to pay if you ever want a replacement card.

Dude. If you aren’t trying to do satire by being purposefully obtuse, I think you REALLY need to switch to decaf. (In my best Churchmouse voice) “C’mon, man!”

No, I tried to do what I thought was correct, was given bad info by people that were supposed to know and grew tired of jumping through hoops.

I'm not upset, just trying to share an experience I personally experienced. Is that's not we do here? I've shown no disrespect or anger towards anyone.

Given I'm not an internet expert, nor one on Indiana gun law, I did what I thought was best for my situation. However satirical I am has nothing to do with this conversation or the type of coffee I drink.

I apologize if I wasted anyone's time with my query.

But when you called ISP (the experts) and they said “just update your address” you took it a step further and also chose an updated card. According to you, they didn’t also tell you to get a card.

Just update the address. If you return update it again and you are GTG.
