A trick to reducing this time lag is to keep the priming charge away from the vent hole. it significantly shortens the prime flash to main charge ignition time. Use 4F powder for best results, but back in the day shooters just used the same material that was in the main charge.

Yep. Pyrodex is a bit harder to ignite than regular black powder. Little brother had to install a hotshot nipple on his caplock that used c/f primers to get it to ignite reliably.
