I have the shelf kind…… that one does not “fry” atleast doesn’t seem to work right for me almost more like a toaster oven with extra buttons.

Bought the basket style one after using my parents… that one can actually be compared to fried foods. Healthier and cleaner too. But if making something like an elephant ear I did side by side comparison and the air fryer does the job but it doesn’t taste as good. I think the healthy gets in the way. But French fries or oven frozen foods……. It works great.

also anyone with the air fryers give air fried hotdogs a go, you’re welcome.
The Vortex has both shelves and a rotating basket.

See, that is what I worry about. I have never seen one, much less seen one in action. I have thought about getting one and also those insta pots that were all the rage a few years ago. But it would probably just sit in a cabinet.
I am not a fan of pressure cooking.

I have the Power XL, both the air fryer and the misnamed toaster over (rack style?). The toaster over sucks as an air fryer, the bottom coils get dripped on when cooking chicken wings and smokes out the house. The top coil of basket styles doesn't have this problem.

The other is good, also had the Cosori, it was good as well. They seem very similar. with frying, basket length and width matter a lot more than depth. Usually anything layered doesn't crisp up as well as it could.

When you get one keep it unplugged when not in use, I have heard of them starting fires while just sitting there plugged in.

The biggest advantage I have seen at least for the basket style that we have is that if you are cooking something like French fries, a few chicken wings, or a vegetable side, etc that lends itself to this type of cooking is that the air fryer preheats quicker and cooks a bit faster due to the way it cooks, but also largely I think due to the smaller size of most air fyers compared to an oven.

Those same benefits can be draw backs, i.e. generally smaller size, etc.

It is just me here, so that might be a plus for me.

i use an instapot vortex. has a rotisserie, which i will admit gets used more than i thought. kids bake fries using a round basket that utilizes the rotisserie. think it does up to 4 lb whole chicken.

This is what we use. It's the Ninja flip, so it flips up when not in use to take less counter space.
There's a new model out, that goes to 500*, has a sear plate and is slightly larger.

This one is larger, but doesn't flip up.

    And the new larger one.

We've used ours for almost 3 years, on a daily basis, and have no complaints.

On that type, doesn't the inside of the box get greasy, dirty? My basket type is so easy to take to the sink and clean, so just wondering about the box type.

It depends on what's being cooked, but I don't think it's been a problem.
I'll have to ask the Mrs. about the cleaning part, but I know it doesn't take her but a few minutes.

    Edit:

The Mrs. says the elements are on the top, and can be a pain to clean around sometimes.
The bottom comes out for cleaning. She said some people may not think it's too bad to clean.
But, we do use it daily so...

If you're a "buy once, cry once" kind of person and believe that single task kitchen appliances are to be avoided:

Our microwave died and I mounted a shelf and bought one as a replacement. In-laws have had theirs for over 10 years, so I felt like it would be money well spent.

    Agreed!

Bacon is another air fryer "secret" that may well be the very best way to fry it...

Icing on the cake is the built in bacon dripping catchment system.

Bacon one meal leaves drippings to coat veggies, chicken, backstrap, fish, steak, etc, the next meal.

We have this one. Seems to be fine. We use it daily.

As far as the Instantpot, we use ours a lot, probably 3X+ per week.

I have always been averse to kitchen gadgets. The InstantPot was given to us when my daughter decided they made her too nervous and we got the air fryer as a Christmas gift. I was like, sheesh, I don't need/want this stuff!

But now I don't think I'd not have them.
