This is just another reason why one should never 'play-around-with' a real firearm...
Lack of muzzle control...booger finger on trigger...reckless concern for other's safety...
Sad that the young man lost his life, needlessly, through the carelessness and recklessness of another deputy.

I did something similar when I was 12 and "jokingly" pointed a rifle at my buddy's brother. I pulled the trigger and shot him in the chest from about two feet away. Fortunately for me it was a pellet gun and not a "real" firearm.

It was pumped up enough to kill a rabbit. The pellet skipped off his breast bone and ricocheted off to the side. It tunneled several inches under his skin and he did still have to go the the hospital to have the pellet removed.

It was one of the dumbest things I've ever done and I am grateful it didn't kill the kid and ruin my life in the process. That event taught me a big lesson in respect for firearms after that.

“A round fired and hit Walsh.” Gotta love the media when they say it like this.

A round didn’t fire itself. Read…. When he pulled the trigger killing this person.

Same as a car wreck when they say “the car veered off the road….. Read….. when the driver drove his car off the road…..For an unknown reason …Read ….Reckless Driving.

    No accountability any more…

Headline (quoting the Sheriff) is an contradiction of terms. "Extremely dumb .. accident."

Extremely dumb, isn't an accident. It's negligence. What a tragedy all the way around.

This is why I do not like carelessness with firearms.
I've had to shove a barrel or grab a barrel and move it away from me many times in my life.
I trained my children to never point a firearm at anything unless you are going to shoot it, and beware of where the muzzle is pointing at all times.

    Blue gun kills again.

He thought the gun was unloaded. So, in his mind, since it is unloaded, (a harmless prop) it is ok to break the muzzle and trigger rule. After all, many do this all the time in training, when they use the (harmless gun prop) improperly, in my opinion. I have taken ridicule in pointing out the transference that becomes the negligence.

I repeat, NEVER break the rules with props or guns. There are better ways of training than using 150 year old traditions.

Now we can expect to hear from the self appointed followers of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

    See you on the range.

100% tragic and 100% avoidable. This same thing happened to a friend from childhood. He was killed while we were in college because someone pointed a gun at him that the other guy thought was unloaded and pulled the trigger. I remember reading about it in the paper. It made me mad because of how stupid and senseless it was. Alcohol was involved and makes me wonder if it was involved in this incident as well.

Kinda sounds similar to Alec Baldwin's 'accident' on the movie set in New Mexico when he shot and killed the cinemaphotographer.
