Of course, you didn't care about IU basketball. That's what I would expect. Why would anyone growing up in the South care about IU basketball? Growing up in Indiana, I didn't know anyone who cared about SEC football. That's the way it should be. LOL.
There was a comment about national respect at one time for IU basketball, referring to one before it about outside of Indiana no one caring about Mellencamp or IU basketball.

And for the record, after being here for 28 years, I still don't on both topics.

You are too young to have any experience when IU basketball was relevant, that was over 25 years ago since there was any significant national respect

I'm just saying that the fact that you didn't care about IU basketball in the South doesn't mean it didn't have national respect. There was a great amount of national respect for IU basketball in the 70s and 80s by anyone that cared anything about college basketball. I mean I respect the quality of SEC football; I'm just not interested in it because I have no connection to any of the schools.

I dated a woman in the 90's that said she tried to put Mellencamp in prison. She said the pending case went away, when Mellencamp build Mellencamp Pavilion. :n00b:

I won't add to the rumors, but this woman didn't pass the info along in jest. When Cherry Bomb came on the radio, she'd shut it off. She wasn't making anything up.

I cannot attest to anything, but the woman believed it.

Means nothing. I’ve never met the man and I do the same when that song comes on. Horrid Music.

Most people on the side of the road during a parade don't stand as the flag goes by.

I remember a teenager looking around, not sure if he was supposed to stand, then he just stood and put his hand over his heart.
I was happy he did it, it's hard to 'go against the grain'.

But most around him stayed in their seats.

I was always a Kentucky fan (note that I said WAS, I don’t give a crap about any of it now), but as far as I’m concerned, IU basketball ceased to exist when Bobby Knight was terminated.
In 94-95? Working for Otis two of us were pulling out the escalator bull drive gear out of the Student Union Building 2-3 escalator. It was a few days work both in and out, one afternoon we heard lots of commotion and profanity with a group of people walking down the hallway.
One man was pointing, cursing and threatening the others walking with him.
I looked at my helper ( who was a Indiana boy)
And said that dude needs to be punched in the mouth.
The helper stuttered and said Thats Bobby Knight!!!!!!!! I said I could care less, but that guy needs a beat down for talking to people that way.

Oh yeah, I’m well aware. I’ve heard all the stories, and actually witnessed a few going back to 1980 or so.

The fact remains that the IU glory days ended when Bobby Knight was no longer coach.

Why would you? It would be unusual if you did, you were not here for the events of historic proportions.

It didn't look like a protest (to me). It looked like an old man that doesn't even like football, sitting oblivious while he stuffed his money maker. Disrepectful regardless. But it's choice.
He actually LOVES football. When I was at IU in 1990, I played touch football with his band. A year later I was working at the Bloomington airport for Cook Aviation. He chartered Bill Cook's Astra all the time. Threw a football on the tarmac with him a few times. He loved talking about football and playing football, all the time.

He always treated me VERY nicely and like a normal everyday guy. Always polite. Always warm and friendly. Never arrogant. I really liked him every time I interacted with him.

Years later my family and I had finished eating at the Nashville House. He was suprised at how many kids we had and bantered with us in a really friendly way. My mother-in-law, who can be pretty rude (not always intentional) made a not so nice comment to JM about his smoking. He was good humored about it and told her she was right that he shouldn't do that.

So I'm not going to beat up a guy who was nice every single one of the dozen or so times I was around him, especially being an international superstar.

Besides all that, he's made LOTS of music over the years that I've enjoyed very much.

Yeah, I'd have been happy with a half assed standing while on his phone. At least he tried. Thats a lesser douche move.

I've had several interactions with him and those around him (we never played catch though). Every interaction he was pleasant and oddly normal and grounded, given his success. I used to keep time with a lady friend who's father was part of his security team. Her dad had a signed painting from JM hanging in their house. And it was a very impressive painting. Having said that, there are well known occasions of him acting like a jerk. But who doesn't sometimes? I like his music +/-. Sitting during the national anthem is inconsiderate, but it's his right to object how he sees fit. I just think that particular pic makes him look more aloof than an active objector. I stand, face flag, hand over heart. I taught my children to do the same.

It was definitely a protest, and in fact he has been known to kneel in protest since the start of the BLM movement.

Here is an article about him kneeling in protest in 2018:
    https://apnews.com/article/b7dfda83e41b47cba4ba046f599d9108

Here is an article about him supporting BLM while performing in 2020, and at the end of his race baiting and antipolice song he kneeled and raised his right fist in the air. https://www.indystar.com/story/ente...ed-blm-during-farmaid-performance/3557963001/

So not only was this a form of protest, it's par for the course with this clown. He is known as super anti-cop because his sons have been in trouble with the law in the past. (His two sons and another guy were arrested together for jumping a guy and beating and stomping him while he was down. ) I've never understood why Johnny Cougar never moved out to California with the rest of his leftest Hollywood buddies and I'll never understand why so many Hoosiers worship the ground he walks on.

I'll have to take your word for it as I'm unable to glean his inner thoughts from a photograph.

I don't worship him. Nobody I know worships him. So, again, I'll have to take your word for it

Here is an article about him supporting BLM
People are free to support whom so ever they choose. Apparently I view BLM in a different light than he.
