I remember when DST started up again in Minnesota. It was stopped after WWII ended and started up again in the 60's. Minneapolis and St Paul could not agree on what dates to change the clocks so they each had their own schedule. You could drive around by the river and go through several time changes in a few minutes. Then in 1966 the Federal govt put out standards and then, of course, all was wonderful.

Sunrises and sunsets do occur at a different time every day. Global navigation has been based on GMT (UTC) for over a century. In everyday travel there would not a need to figure in time zone or DST changes. We could also drop A.M. and P.M. Noon has no real significance today in everyday life. No one sets their watch by the sun. In scheduling it has the same significance as 10:30 A.M. or 2:45PM. We could use a 24-hour clock.

On the other hand, I do not see resetting the 3 clocks in my house twice a year to be a problem.
UTC would have the Sun coming up at 12:30PM today and setting at 10:30PM in Indianapolis.

On June 21st it would have come up at 11:16AM and set on June 22nd at 2:14AM.

That would require a huge mental shift for people. I ask a California resident what time they go to work I do have a mental picture of the day when they respond 8 am, just as they do when I say I go to work at 8 am. Take a lot of learning to unlearn time as we know it and go to UTC…

Question; why are we using the terms DST/standard instead of eastern/central?
I’d prefer to be on Eastern all the time, but someone posted a chart upthread that I interpreted as showing the noon sun tells us we should be on central, and from that math/science/evidence I guess I could get behind that. Evidence, not opinion.
Too parochial. Regardless of ST or DST, folks in the Mountain time zone are never on Eastern time. Folks in the Pacific time zone are never on Eastern or Central

One nomenclature supplies a concept with meaning everywhere, the other only locally

Just stop throwing data at us claiming it should be objectively your way. Or that we don't need what we want
Does not the obverse remain true. I only 'threw data' when challenged to produce such a poll and only requoted it when another asserted (incorrectly) that opinion favored what he wants

I welcome the DST partisans finally admitting its just that they want it that way, now wrap your head around that not everyone wants it that way and certainly not a majority

So whether it is economic activity generated or energy savings or falsely claimed popularity, there is no justification for what you want over what I want or vice versa

You currently enjoy de facto having your way and do not wish that to be changed. I am reminded of the Legalize It! debate and the reason such controversies generate asymmetric friction

Given a mechanism, I would certainly pull out all the stops to get what I want instead, hence the 'Woe unto midnight golf if they ever put it to a referendum' quote

Maybe saddle a shorter horse occasionally

What is your preference for clock settings?

(I bet you have stated it already but I am trying to avoid going back and looking for it.)

I think we need to acknowledge there aren't just two sides, yours and the other.

The DST partisans don't want to change the clocks back and forth, but they do want the sunset to occur an hour later on the clock than it does in standard time.

Then you have the clock flippers, we'll call them, they want to keep it like it is because they hate establishing consistent sleep cycles. And probably beat their kids. As everyone should.

And then there are the Standard Time partisans, who just want to stay on standard time. Because they hate being in the cool group.

Speaking of cool, there's one more. The cool people think we should just ditch time zones altogether and go by UTC. But this group knows that the clock flippers, the ST partisans, and the DST partisans' minds will explode, so they concede it will never happen in their lifetime.

And I've said at least two or three times, this is a preference. No matter which group you belong to, it is a preference. It is subjective. Data has no place in it other than an internet argument to establish bragging rights.

I do indeed want it my way. Have said that many times. That's definitionally true of a preference. But, I do not currently have it my way. We're not on UTC. That would be my way. And my second choice, if we're rank-choosing it, is to have DST year round.

Third choice, eh, a tossup between standard time and leaving it the same, except I would favor keeping it the same if the rest of the nation flips back and forth.

Those are my choices. I don't care if you don't like my choice. I get to have preferences, just like you do. I may not get my way. You may not get your way. But we at least get to decide what our own preferences are. We are expressing opinions about the way we would like things to be. But sides are arguing and debating as if there's an eminent election and we must be on the correct side or else.

Then there are those that don't care what time zone it's in.
Just change it to some time, and leave it.

Heck. Make it midnight when the sun is at it's zenith.
    I don't care.
    Set it
    Leave it

That brings up another option too. Just make it 5:00 PM all around the world and stop the clocks. Unplug em, pull the batteries or staple the hands in place, whatever. You would never have to worry about what time it is ever again.

Hey. If it’s UTC I don’t care about time zones.
