Watch the contract pricing language closely. Some of the discounts they are offering may only be for the first 6 or 12 months of your service. After that, price goes up. I know that going in but still sucks when the increase happens.

There's probably also some very fine print somewhere that says, "We reserve the right to change/add to/subtract from/charge more for this contract at any time we want without notification, however YOU are locked in to whatever we say you are locked in to (which is also subject to change without notice)."

Regarding ATT, but not DirecTV, I had to call and see what could be done about my rates after getting inundated with Xfinity marketing. They dropped my bill significantly by *adding* phone service with a 1 year contract and a 2 year price fix.

Part of the "New" game we all have to play. Cell service as well.

My last angry phone call scored me free HBO, Cinimax, Showtime, and 60+ premium sports channels.

I wasn't asking for anything. All I was trying to do was add an HBO/Cinemax promotion they sent in the mail, which the rep insisted didn't exist.

Yeah it was funny when I called to cancel our service, they were offering me all kinds of GREAT deals to continue the service. At one point I believe they even offered me the full subscription for like $50/month for 18 months! They just couldn't get it thru their heads that we wanted them GONE!!!

Anyone having frequent signal loss with DTV needs their dish re-aligned or stabilized. My dad had frequent signal issues and we found that the installers were lazy with the install and the dish was swaying in the wind. We mounted it properly, re-aligned it, and it now takes a severe thunderstorm to cause a signal problem. Even when that happens it is only for a few minutes. Heavy sticky snow can be an issue but it doesn't usually happen. If you really have an issue with it you can get a cover or heating element to deal with the snow.

I'm pretty happy with Direct other than the price is outrageous after the introductory offer ends. You do lose the picture during storms, but that will be with any satellite company.

Out of curiosity, are you getting HD quality pictures with your Sling + "crappy" DSL internet?

It is not always HD when the internet is slow, but I'd say it is HD quality at least 95% of the time. Honestly, the sound gets of lesser quality before the picture does most of the time for me, but it isn't that often.

I have my dish reinforced. It's not installed like your standard quicky dish install I made sure of it. I still lose signal in storms and heavy rain. The signal being blocked has nothing to do with stability

What are your signal strength readings in clear weather for the 99° and 103° satellites? They should be in the 90 - 95 range. If not the dish alignment can be improved. You're right that the signal can be blocked but it should take a storm cell in the 30,000+ foot range to do it. A simple rain shower shouldn't block the signal.

We have had Direct TV for 20 years. We have the dish near the peak of the roof. Last week we got a new roof. The roofers put the dish back where it was. Of course we lost our signal, we expected that. The dish has to be pointed pretty exact. We call direct tv and they send someone out. They send a subcontractor, not an actual DT employee. He looks up at my dish and says he can't go up on my roof. He is not allowed to get off of his ladder. Hey says what he can do is cancel the order and go up there for cash on his own and adjust the dish. I told him to leave. We call DT and say WTF, our dish was originally put up there by them and we need it adjusted. I make it very clear that they have to get off the ladder and walk our roof to reach our dish. The DT person says OK in her broken English. Two days later another subcontractor comes out and says they can't get off the ladder just like the first one, my wife is home this time while I'm at work. My wife has him install another dish on our roof from his ladder. So now we have two dishes on our roof for DT and only one is in use. If I were home I would have told him to go away and looked for an alternative to DT.

You just cannot make this stuff up…

So likely scenario; contractors go on roofs, fall through bad roofs, so DTV says no longer allowed to go on roofs, contractors make a few bucks cash to fix it off the books, if they trust the roof, or they make more than the adjustment fee DTV pays by putting on a second dish following DRV rules.

Either way it is about the money…

We’re ditching Dtv in 3 days, I guess that’s when the billing cycle ends. They raised our rate by $60 from last month!! We’re going the streaming route.
I just call every year and get another significant discount for 12 months. Wife likes the stuff on our channel package, and the bill is cheaper than marriage counseling or a divorce.

We’ve done that for several years, but this time they wouldn’t budge. There’s nothing we watch that can’t be found streaming.

We ditched Dish a while ago. Youtube TV has a very attractive package we've had a while. It's worth a look.
