I have a Flex. I'm a wagon guy and there aren't many to choose from unless you go German. If your wife could get passed the looks of it, it is a great vehicle.

Don't forget the Suby's. I was never a wagon guy - always drove a pickup. Last Friday I hauled 1000 pounds of paper out to Valpo, and on Saturday cruised to Wisconsin and got 28 mpg there and back, with a load of stuff for my son and his family.

Also has nearly 300 ft pounds of torque, with the turbo. If it lasts, I'll probably drive a Subaru for a long time. I won't say they're stylish by any means, but I don't think they're totally fugly.

Couldn't go down the Subaru road. Mom had one and had problems with the transmission from day 1. My Flex doesn't get the gas mileage you speak of (just got 23 going to ISU and back), but the twin turbo V6 and AWD is nothing to scoff at. Plus I love the interior, four captain chairs, sunroofs for all, plenty of room in the back for equipment and if needed a third row on occasions.

Our last 2 Fords, Explorer and Edge both began to develop electrical issues after about 2-1/2 years. Looked to trade at the dealer we bought those from, and 2 other vehicles and payments would be $700+ a month, up about $250/ month. Said screw that. Our neighbor works for Subaru, had about 300,000 miles and no issues on her Outback. Went to Subaru in Merrillville, payments went up about $50, more features and much better mileage. We are on our 2nd Outback as they were wanting used vehicle because of Covid. Got a nicer Outback for about the same payment and term.

My wife was car shopping back in the Spring and I test drove an Outback with her. She didn't care for it much but I was impressed and it would be up there on the list if I were in the market.

What year was your Mom's Suby? I know the older ones had some issues, but they've been good to me so far (on the third one now - 2 Foresters and the Outback).
