IMO that's even better. Less fleas and ticks on them when the cold weather gets here. That's the worst part of early squirrel season, late season is the way to go IMO
That's weird-I have, over the last 50+ years killed literally thousands of fox and gray squirrels, and while I occasionally find a warble on a gray(never on a fox squirrel),I have never seen a tick or flea on a squirrel. Rabbits yes,but squirrels never.

Thanks to everyone for the help and suggestions!

We’re very likely moving to the Lafayette area in the next few months, so Beanblossom will still be a drive, but a good bit closer than from Warsaw. I may bug you later in the season if that move happens for us, LOL.

But for now, I’ll poke around on the site @Bigtanker shared (thank you!) and might give things a try up here. I made the 1985 cutoff by a few hours :D , but will likely still attend a hunter safety course anyway. I do have a few .22s that’ll work along with a 20ga 1100, but I’m hoping to have a few .22 air rifles up and running soon as well.
Leave that 20 ga at the house. Pick a .22 that shoots subsonic hollow points into about a half inch at 35 yds and go kill squirrels. Hickory trees did ok this year around here. Those are usually the first food that will draw them. Then beech if there are any, then oaks.

I've had warbles on both and fleas aplenty some years. No ticks yet. I did shoot a grey one year with some kinda skin condition that Made him look like a fuzzy Shar Pei dog, over about 99% of his body. Never saw one like it before or since.

You're pretty lucky then. I've never had a warble on a fox either though I have heard others that have.

Spent some time this morning checking sights on some squirrel rifles. It’s been several years since I’ve chased the furry little buggers but my wife has expressed an interest this year so I guess we’re going squirrel hunting.

Watching her bounce empty shotgun hulls all over the 50yd berm today was pure joy especially considering she has been dealing with some vision issues that had shaken her confidence.

From top to bottom is a CZ 455 Lux (the rifle she was shooting), a Remington 241, a Remington Model 34 with factory Lyman peep sight and a Winchester Model 490 with a Redfield 1.5x5 wide view.

What, the move, or the hunting??

Just kidding. I’ll see when the next hunter safety course is that I can attend and will go from there. Work’s kind of crazy right now but I’ll try to fit it in as soon as I can, I wanna go do some hunting! :)
Too bad I can`t go with you. Your enthusiasm is contagious.

Online is super boring but then again so was the class………. I have done both for a new young hunter I’d recommend in person for someone older…… I’d recommend online

Years ago when we took it with my sons the CO'S served fried crappie filets they had caught at Monroe Reservoir on the second day for lunch.. Just saw that one of the guys who taught the course passed away this week.

Online can be done in sections/ not all at once in one sitting. That was helpful to my attention span challenged daughter.

Lol, when I did the online course I actually wanted to get it all done in one sitting, but the course had a timer that wouldn't let you progress past a section until a minimum time had passed, I guess to try to make sure you read the whole thing. Some of the info was new to me, but most of it was extremely basic, and by the time I got to 3 pages worth of text explaining what the differences are between revolvers, muzzleloaders, semiautos, etc, I was literally going into the html editor trying to find a way to change the javascript to let me move to the next section before the timer was up. Ultimately my efforts were defeated because they had server-side protections to stop you from doing that, so I just left the course open in a background tab while I did other stuff, and would come back to it every few minutes to click to the next section. Still managed to pass all the quizzes just fine.

Are you sure? My daughter was 11 when she took hers.
Maybe it was a birthday thing? Dnr told me under 12 you have to do in person. And when I tried to schedule buy online as soon as I put her birthday in it went away. So am I sure…. No. But it is from my experience not doable.
