With regards to arming sheep that is a leap that all, teachers are sheep. I can tell you my wife is far from a sheep and she is a Middle school teacher that would help ensure the safety of her students.

With out knowing the facts, I would think there may be a lot of factors that influenced actions taken. For instance ingress design, we’re the doors steel or glass, was there duel doors again too many unknown.

Same around here offices are off to the side out of view to entryways and there our double doors in which both locks need to be released.

Your wife must be one of the 5% or so teachers that identify as conservative. There are brave teachers that would die for their kids. However, that is very different than purchasing a handgun, training with it, then having the will to take a person's life with it when pressed. Teachers like your wife are rare in that field. Almost unicorn status.
