    Look fine to me.

But then again, for me fishing is all about the experience, not what I catch. I could catch ones that size all day and I'd be happy as a clam.

As a catch and release guy, I dont care if Im not hauling in 14"+ fish or not.
Yeah I have no problem catching small ones. I like catching them all.

Pan fish have apparently left our area for spawning areas. Last few days I have basically struck out on about 1/4 mile of shoreline and a couple kayak excursions checking out some spots not fishable from shore. Boats that I can obssserve aren’t doing any good either. Last evening watched a young couple with 2 youngsters in a boar and an Amish fellow in kayak off and on for about an hour. Did not see 1 fish caught. Guess I am done fishing here for a while. May trip to Minnesota was cancelled. July trip to Erie still on the schedule.

So I’m walking thru the yard and see this “part” of a catfish, few feet from sea wall.

    Flipped over.

I assume left by our resident Blue Heron. Looks like been there 2 or 3 days. He normally visits couple times a day. Bluegills I see him swallow whole. I have seen him with a bass that he worked on for several minutes to “cut” in half before swallowing

Can you guys recommend a good rod & open face real? I don't mind spending a few hundred bucks if necessary. Just don't want to spend thousands.

I have gotten away from spending big money on rigs. Too much warranty hassles and too specialized equals PIA.

I just put together this ultralight combo this year. Relatively inexpensive, quickly replaceable, yet still reasonably good name brands.

Honestly have not put as much time on the equipment as I'd like, but so far I like it a lot...

Rods are personal, but for a reel, I got a Lew's Mach Crush this spring in the 200 size, and love it. Bail is easy to trip and I love the handle. I always knew Lew's for their casting reels, but just now discovered their spinning reels and I am a convert.

I bought this Shimano Sienna to put on a ugly stick that flyingsquirrel gifted my son. You can see it in the pics I posted above. It is a really smooth real. Size depends on what you're going after.

A good friend of mine also picked up a Lew's spinning combo at Walmart for his son this year. Don't know the price other than he said it was pretty cheap. l like the Shimano real better, but the rod is really nice and sensitive.

It depends on what exactly you want to catch with it but it is hard to beat the Diawa BG series for the price(~$100). They range from a good panfish/walleye/bass reel to something capable of handling all but the biggest saltwater species.

For a good generalist rod at a reasonable price, I like the Favorite Ol' Salty. Although designed for saltwater, it'll handle most general freshwater tasks well. Usually under $150.

Thanks guys. Now that I think about it, that was a pretty stupid question. I think I will just head on over to the Bass Pro and pick one out that feels good to ME. Hell, one time years ago, I noticed even Walmart had some rather expensive stuff. All I know is, I don't like bait casters. I love the balanced feel of an 'open reel'. Or, I noticed they are mostly called 'spinning reels' now. ?
Anyway, I know I will probably pay more for it, but, buying online is mostly good for stuff you are knowledgeable about.

Smart money is to do this, but buy nothing. Come home and research the rod/reel you thought was the right one.

Comments sections of Amazon, the online tackle stores, Midway, etc. All have valuable info.

For me, I prefer long rods with purposely designed reel seat/grip area. The more a grip area is designed for ergonomics, the better for my tastes. I have had years when I'd wake up in the night crying with hand pain from casting during the fish harvest season. Once had to change the reel handle to fish left handed.
