My mother is having a time with cats getting into her garden this year and digging up her plants. She's tried powder and liquid repellent and it doesn't work.

I'm thinking about loading up some 38 special shotshells with those 6mm plastic airsoft bb's.
Would a primer be enough to push that kind of load out at around 400fps for a non lethal load to chase them off.

I know I could buy her a airsoft gun but this seems like a fun project and a complete waste of a 10 cent primers

I don't know about your idea, but Speer makes some red plastic cartridge cases that spit out a Black plastic wadcutter bullet using nothing but a primer for propellant. They are .38 revolver sized. They were really for indoor target practice in your house. They will punch a nice round hole through a paper target stapled to cardboard, but be stopped by a grocery sack full of rags behind it. Pretty accurate for 25 or so feet.

Also in that vein, you can take an empty case thats primed and push it into a slab of paraffin for a wax slug. I have tried shot in my 1851 and if I recall right, it went a little doughnut on the pattern, I suppose from the rifling.

Not much by law in the country.
She would shoot them dead, but dad says no he likes his cats :lmfao:
I don't think cruelty laws have geographical barriers?
I wouldn't want to read that you had an encounter with an angry owner, and lose your 2nd amendment rights.

That's an excellent idea. I went searching for the cases and the bullets, but none in stock.

    Cry me a river.

If a animal domestic or wild is tearing up your property in the country you can shot them dead. Simple as that.

I suppose you prefer dead to being shot with a non lethal round to learn not to go there or maybe shock collars?

They do make motion-activated "sprinklers" that are pretty effective against all critters, not just cats. They're designed to be deterrents to unwanted "visitors".

Finish them off or find something less. The cat we rescued had several BBs fished out from under his skin by the vet. If dad likes "his" cats, he can train them.

If you must do something "less" lethal, I'd go with pushing the case into a block of wax or maybe even soap for a soft wadcutter/shotgun.

Varmints caught in my yard get a 9mm. I've had racoons and groundhogs take a .22 to the head and manage to spasm somewhere hard to reach before they died.

Years ago, I read a story about the wax slugs and just primers in .38/.357. The author was using these for birds and other pests inside his pole barn, and didn't want holes in his roof, walls, equipment, etc. I just had to try this, so I melted a couple of my wifes candles and it worked great! If I recall, the Sandalwood scent was the most accurate :) .

MAKE SURE you resize the brass (or use new). I didn't, and a couple of the cases were snug in cylinder. The primer alone wasn't enough force to push the case back, but the primer came 1/2 way out of the pocket. This really gummed things up. Cylinder wouldn't turn or open, and I had a devil of a time getting things put right. Again this was either a tight case or loose primer pocket with a couple. The rest worked great, and I was really surprised how accurate these slugs were.

I know some people do not like cats, but they are not cooking them properly.

Seriously, I live in the country and and I like to shoot pests too. Racoons get 22LR, but chipmonks get it with an airgun. I love hunting chipmonks. My best shot was 75 yards with my R-11 air rifle. Not pertanant, I just wanted to brag. I would not shoot my neighbor's cat though. That would just cause more problems. Airsoft may be ok if they do not penatrate the skin. No need to be cruel.

A few years ago I found a gadget on Amazon that emits high frequency sound that deters animals and the batteries are solar charged. There are a few frequencies, depending on the type of animal. Or you can choose all frequencies. That's how mine works. When I installed it, the racoons that were invading my grill started going to my neighbor's house. The frequencies are supposed to be too high for humans to hear, but our daughter could hear them inside the house. We could not. So people under 30 may be able to hear those sounds. There were some internet audio tests that demonstared this a few years ago.

There are several of these devices that you could check out. The one I have says: Rat, Squirrel, Deer, Raccoon, Skunk, Rabbit, Mole, Dog, Cat. It is motion activated. This is the one I have, but looks like an upgraded model. Shop around, since there may be more features out there than when I got mine. Something like this in a garden may solve the problem. Good luck.

It isn't lead BB's it's those airsoft 6mm BB and my goal would be to make them the same velocity as an airsoft gun so there won't be any penetrate. Kids, and adults shoot themselves all the time with them in airsoft battles. They bounce off without injuries.

Maybe a 12ga load of them and use it as my airsoft battle gun :):

Dad isn't going to train them and mom is 77 now she plants a 30x50 garden and with food prices soaring and possibly a famine coming she'd rather eat vegetables than cat at least for awhile.
These cats are strays and drop off cats probably by city people who no longer want them not neighbors cats. They are not our cats and dad seems to be collecting a collection of them.

She just bought a high frequency device and she is going to try it next.

One of the wild strays tried taking food from our coonhound and meet its demise the other day. One down and 8+ to go.
