I guess everybody in journalism is capable of this. They just have to find the issue that they feel strongly enough. In this case it’s mask hysteria and covid.

I bet if you ask her she will be a STRONG pro mask stance because she thinks they work and would stop this mess, and anyone who refuses is a murderer.

I found a pretty reasonable news source with Krystal and Saagar in the Breaking Points podcast. They talked about the NPR story. It's typical of many in the media these days. YouTube has samples of their broadcasts, worth a listen.

Here is their story reporting it. It was not flattering.

Not addressing the mask issue, but as to journalists, you are probably right. Once they publish something, they are right and nothing will change their mind. Of course, we see the same thing on INGO as well... Many members here won't back off a statement once made, facts be damned.

The journalists I've known have a desire to report significant stories that drive change. They want to 'make a difference'. In my opinion journalists should actually have a mundane job writing about what happened at a place or event that readers did not attend.

NPR has a tremendous rainbow of diversity in their newsroom but zero ideologic diversity.

The public editor for NPR seems more focused on removing gender-specific terms (like fire fighter instead if fireman) then representing the interest of the public in good reporting. It's about what caters to their core audience and keeps the donations flowing with every e-begging campaign.

I dropped my NPR membership 20 years ago.

So you do not believe there should be investigative journalists?
The topic is reporting lies and even in the face of the truth not retracting them. That would apply to all journalists regardless of type. So an investigative journalist should stick to mundane job writing about what happened at a place or event that readers did not attend.

If an entity is engaged in shady activity and hiding actual events a reporter may need to dig to report those events. Most reporters seem fixated on creating stores that drive change even if the facts don't support it. I good example is Ms. Totenberg's report of actions by Sotomayor around face masks. Good reporting if it were true. Unfortunately Sotomayor denied it publicly and Ms. Totenberg has no evidence to support her report. Her credibility should be shot but of course it isn't.

The question this brings up is the biggest puzzlement of my life, why does our society put up with proven liars.

Plagiarism derailed many a presidential campaign, I believe even Bidet in the 80’s, but not today, society doesn’t seem to care if one is a known liar…

Easy, because people like to listen to lies they want to believe even if they know or suspect they're wrong. NPR doesn't care if the story wasn't accurate because their listeners don't care. They gave the story their members wanted to hear.

I think the issue is opinion has overwhelmed facts in reporting. Obviously opinion was always a part of reporting, but it seems like it used to take a back seat to actual fact reporting. Today most "journalists" give opinion with possibly a little fact thrown in.

And I was replying to part of what HE said. Are you playing thread police again?

I believe that is the way they are taught in journalism schools today and they are recruited for it…
