Correct. As a couple people have mentioned you can have your handgun in Illinois. It must stay in your car. You can also take a gun into your hotel room provided it is properly transported between the vehicle and room. So an unloaded handgun can be moved into the hotel if unloaded and in a case.

I travel IL quite often for work. Even been know to take a firearm with me. In a nutshell Gun unloaded in a closed case, magazine can be loaded but separate. IL does not specify what constitutes a case. So a price of luggage or some type of bag made to conceal or camouflage a firearm is OK.

If a person travels IL quite a bit and operates outside our safe State, some thought needs to be given as to how to transport, hide, secure firearms.

I remember reading a article about " 6 seconds to fire " where you can have a Handgun & a loaded magazine in the same sealed gun case ... as long as the Magazine is separate- it was legal
Luckily that is no longer the case, and hasn't been for a couple of years.
No need to have it in a case, mag out, anywhere, as long as you stay in your vehicle.

Carry it on your person, concealed. From the above link...
Yep, that's the way it is now. Before their laws were changed handguns had to be unloaded and in a case, loaded mags/speedloaders/ammo could be in the case with them. Some people carried those fanny pack holsters with an unloaded pistol and a magazine. Took about 6 seconds to unzip, grab, and load. Or so they say.

Wow, that is a whole lot better than when we used to drive through Il. to visit our daughter in Colorado, had to lock it up unloaded (I had a LTCH then too)
We moved our youngest Son back from Denver New Years eve/day earlier this month..I promised myself that I would not set foot in Ill=or any $$ in that ****hole state...On the way back young Son had to pull over 20 min from Indiana state line for a "Power Nap"...I DID leave something for them in the truck stop restroom....Bill.

When I look at at the CCW app it shows IL does not honor it. It sounds like they at least honor it while you are inside you car. As for staying in the hotel, I doubt anyone would leave the gun in the car where someone could steal it and use it. When you rent a hotel room, I would think that would be like renting a home and that would be considered "inside your home" If they want to get technical you could lock it in a case while carrying it into a hotel room. I always worry about carrying a loaded gun in the car period while driving through IL. If that were legal, I would do it and drive over the speed limit more often.
Illinois does not honor the majority of other states permits. That does not apply here, in regards to vehicle carry

Staying in your vehicle armed is 100% legal per Illinois law, you can even exit the vehicle for the purpose of storing it in your trunk.

I'm not sure what the CCW app is, but I travel often and have found handgunlaw.us to be accurate and frequently updated for every state.

Just to clarify a couple things, I was an Illinois certified CCW instructor. Yes you can leave the vehicle with your firearm to store it in your trunk but it is illigal to get out and pump gas while armed. Don't ask me why I am just repeating parts of a stupid law. Illinois does not honor ANY other states carry license period.
Illinois will issue a non-resident CCW but only to states that Illinois determines has similar laws to their own. That list has changed over time but has never been more than four. At this time the states are Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia. Jim.

I’m not sure that’s a factual statement in that it’s illegal to pump gas while armed. You are still in control of your vehicle per the law and it’s an essential function. Now if you leave the vehicle unattended to pay inside then that would apply but pay at the pump I don’t see it.

I’ve read this argument on here before as well, with someone going as far as saying “as long as you are literally touching your car at all times” you are legal. Makes as much sense as anything in a situation where nothing makes sense anyway. Maybe someone has a link to previous threads?
    Anyway, concealed means concealed.

    (e) Nothing in this Act shall prohibit a non-resident from transporting a concealed firearm within his or her vehicle in Illinois, if the concealed firearm remains within his or her vehicle and the non-resident:
    (1) is not prohibited from owning or possessing a
    firearm under federal law;
    (2) is eligible to carry a firearm in public under
the laws of his or her state or territory of residence, as evidenced by the possession of a concealed carry license or permit issued by his or her state of residence, if applicable; and
    (3) is not in possession of a license under this Act.
If the non-resident leaves his or her vehicle unattended, he or she shall store the firearm within a locked vehicle or locked container within the vehicle in accordance with subsection (b) of Section 65 of this Act.

Looks like it could be legal to pump gas and pay at the pump, I don't usually do this but.... If you look long enough you will find parking lot storage where it says you may carry the firearm in the immediate area of the vehicle to lock it in the trunk. It is a lousy law and confusing to read so sorry and I will probably start carrying at the pump. Jim.

Gas stations in bad neighborhoods have been full of miscreants for years hitting you up for money, hassling you, trying to wash your windows, etc. Lately there have been a number of carjackings at gas stations its only a matter of time until a victim fires shots

Wow, all this time I thought I had to stop, unload my gun, and put the ammo in a different part of my truck whenever I went through Illinois. I never go through often soI didn't think to verify what I've learned here. Glad I read this post! Makes things easier.

I lived in IL prior to them issueing CCW. I was there for the CCW institution and recieved a CCW for IL. Changed address once and had to pay $80 for the new card. Paid a fortune for the CCW. Had to have a FOID card the whole time I was there. Yes it is illegal to CC inside the gas station with your IN LTCH. Yes it is illegal to carry in the restroom at an interstate rest area for IN and IL permit holders. IL does not require you to inform police that stop you that you have a firearm, if they do not ask. So, shut up, sign the ticket, and be on your way.

When I was getting ready to leave IL I sold my house and had to use a hotel for a month till my apartment was ready. The hotel had me sign that I would not have a firearm in my room. A big fickle finger of fate award to them.

I'm amazed how many people worry about the intricate details of "the law" when it comes to to the most elemental natural right of self defense. In most instances carrying a firearm when it "displeases the crown" is a misdemeanor (even in Illinois).

I live my life and the decisions I make weighing out the risks and rewards as I see fit to me.
