Interesting. I've never seen a grey fox here in Indiana (lived here since 79). I have seen a few samson foxes, but that's just a genetic anomaly. Just red foxes in this area where I roam. We do have ermine though and bald eagles, plenty of bobcats and the occasional cougar. Even a bear from time to time.

I had a red fox 3 feet outside my home office window on Tuesday and wife and I saw a gray fox while driving last week. Had never seen one before in my life.

Little known fact but Gray foxes can climb trees. They are the only canines that can fully climb trees and have semi-retractable claws.

I haven’t seen a grey here in Clinton county since the 80’s. I’ve seen reds occasionally but there have been years in between seeing them. I used to trap but when there wasn’t as many I quit and would just like to see during deer season. Coyotes took over when the greys started disappearing…..

Grey's used to be really plentiful around here in the 70's. Using a grey fox pup tape in a Johnny Stewart player seldom failed to bring in greys. A lot of people considered them stupid, but they were actually very aggressive when called-sometimes coming back in after being missed, and sometimes getting to close to shoot with a shotgun without damaging the then valuable fur. I have a friend that along with an aquaintence, who was a C.O.,killed 14 one night. I don't think coyotes are totally to blame for their scarcity-I think like groundhogs they were hit hard with distemper and haven't recovered. A lot of places have plenty of greys, coyotes and groundhogs.
