FWIW - following up on the leather chat from the last page, here's a wrap on my x39 ACE with an OG Galil skeleton stock. The guy on the AK Files making/selling these really does terrific work.

Customer requested “Russian Red”. Getting ready to shoot the triple clear coat ... Does this look Russian enough?? Haha.
I don’t really understand why it’s called Russian red. Every AK from Russia I have seen is orange/amber colored. The only other colors I have seen then that is the black, plum, and border guard green color furniture. Now mosins are reddish in color but I think that’s just from generations of cosmoline/shellac. I rubbed down my M44 and it was the same light amber color if not even lighter.

That looks pretty nice though. Will look even better with the coats bringing out the shine.

Well, finally got it home. No bayo lug like the last drop which was a bummer. Wonder what that is all about.
Only one more variant to go!!
Where did you pick yours up from? I just ordered the 7.62 version off AOA and they were supposed to be calling me to take my payment info since the card processor went down as the sale went live. That was on Wednesday and I never heard back after calling and being told they were going to call everyone to get their info when it came back up. So either their payment processor got nuked, they have the slows for getting stuff worked out, or they missed me. Guess I’ll call again on Monday.
Pretty excited though. My AK collection grows larger but I have a LONG way to go still :D

I don’t really understand why it’s called Russian red.

"Russian red" is more a buzzword/marketing term/longtime AK colloquialism. Probably has its roots in the color of the Soviet flag and communism in general. You're right, most eastern bloc militaries relied on shellac for wood furniture, which gave a more orange iodine tint (there's plenty of write-ups around the internet for staining wood with iodine, and I've done it with some success).

Real shellac is natural, derived from beetles, and will have a different hue based on a bunch of factors - the blend, how much is applied, who is doing the application, how the wood is first prepped, temperature/humidity while the shellac cures, number of coats, etc.

Regardless - Russian red is a popular term and looks great on most applications.

I’m quite excited. I just got the picatinny top rail in the mail today. Not sure what route I want to go for the optic. Between an aimpoint of some sort and an eotech. Depending on how well it all comes together and runs, it may become my new house rifle.
