Just ordered their Colonial 30 model. Won’t be ready for me until JULY. But oh well. I did a phone order Independence Liberty Safe. He is in Noblesville. Very nice over the phone. Said he makes a little more ordering over the phone versus online. I’m guessing their online store is just a mirror of libertys.

I was in a dilemma over electronic or mechanical. I was worried someone would smash the electronic part to keep me out if they can’t break in. He said that is an easy fix. But if it’s a mechanical lock, then if they hit it just right, it can jam the safe up to the point where they can’t even get in.

I’m pretty excited to get it. Delivery fee sucks but no way can I go move that myself.

    Fatboy JR extreme
Likewise...minus the ‘extreme’ part though, I think...does the extreme have the extra fancy door panel organizer (holds 10 pistols instead of 6 like the standard fatboy jr?)

Regardless, I love mine. Flat bolts and double layered fire board interior...I upgraded to the interior outlet and have both a Safelert and a SimpliSafe open door monitor in there with external antennae to meet my wifi. Soon will be getting another SimpliSafe camera to focus on the area the safe is in too.

I went with the electronic lock for the reason stated above...if the mechanical locks go into ‘lockout’ there’s not much that can be done to fix and safe has to be opened with a blue wrench or a lot of sawzall blades.

Damn. I think I like the Fatboy safe better than the colonial. I wonder if I can change the order since I made it only a week ago? Surely since production won’t be done until July or so then I have time.

I used to sell them! Truly a quality safe, they just recently 2-3 years ago went from the locking bolts to the plates in some of their lower end safes, not a huge fan of that, but I get the cost savings.

I find the mechanical locks cumbersome, time consuming, too. I like the electronic option, plus you can change the code easily if you want!

I bought a Cabela’s-branded one off a member here a couple years back. It had been in storage for a while but was brand new. I can’t fault the workmanship in it at all. The same model now has 12 gauge steel where mine has 11 gauge, so they might be cutting back in small ways to try to keep their prices competitive.

This one… The website says 12 gauge but that info was pulled from the web after this safe was made and the labels inside say 11 gauge. The fire rating is also higher on mine. Not that that’s worth much…

I have a Colonial 23 with electronic lock that I got from Blythe's in Griffith about 4 years ago. It's the only safe I have ever owned and have been very happy with it.

I bought a Liberty "Timber Ridge"

She's pretty big and I lucked into buying it @ Gander Mountain in Greenwood *of all places* on SALE and their seller/mover was in the store at the same time. I negotiated a time and date to deliver and he cut me a deal. Fabulous..!!

I was pretty jazzed about mine, then I watched one dealer showing them cracking the competition...
Both built almost identical, which means it works on both.

Of course mine was already installed and full up, considering one, or two more when I saw the video...

The local heavy metal/engineering company has the proper equipment to cut heavy plate (much more secure than the sheet metal),
And a trip to the local cement company for refractories (fire brick/forge lining mix),
And I welded my plates together in place and lined it with fire retardant/insulation.

Didn't cost more than two of the commercial safes and is small room size,
Plenty of room for insurance papers, firearms, jewelry, etc.

I used arms room locks, not cheap, but they are every bit, or more, secure than the sheet metal/lugs on the 'Shiny' commerical safes.

I won't be able to take mine with me should I move,
But I don't ever intend on moving so it's not an issue.
Makes a good 'Safe Room' too...

Yeah, it is amazing how easy it is to get into most commercially available gun "safes". Your solution is exactly what I did. When my collection out grew the safe I had originally, rather than buy another safe I decided to turn a walk in closet into my safe. Place I worked at did a lot with sheet steel up to 1/2" so I bought a sheet of 3/16", wanted to use 1/4" but had to think about weight and getting it into place, cut it to size on the laser cutter then welded it in place in the closet. Although in my case the fire proofing is on the outside also as I didn't want to burn the house down in the process. Also left the original door in place so if you didn't know what was behind it, you'd think it was just a closet.
Also with what I had left I made a nice 22 bullet trap.

I’ve had a Liberty Lincoln for many years. I went mechanical lock. I like the old school, no batteries etc. to worry about. If you were broken into and they messed up your safe, the odds are insurance will be involved. The important part is that they did not get into the safe! I know people with the electronic and they like them. Myself, I prefer the mechanical. Get what you like.

Thinking about doing something similar to this myself. After buying a few safes I started inspecting them. The liberty I have has nothing behind the hinges for fire protection And if you ever take off the door cover and look at the locking assembly its very cheaply made. The locking bolts are connected to thin metal. It wouldn't take much to break them off. Most gun safes are alot of false advertisement imo.. I'm thinking about buying 10 guage metal and making a big box that I can put the safe in and lining it with ceramic. I think that would help tremendously over just a box with drywall for fire protection. After doing alot of research you find out that most firearm's burn up in most safes if it's a bad fire.
