Doc Gunn, Inc. will offer a one-day course on the Tactical Treatment of Gunshot Wounds at the Boone County Sheriff's Office in Lebanon, IN on Friday, June 19, 2015.

Our course is based upon Tactical Medicine principles, but while TacMed is designed for military/police tactical entry team members with specialized medical training, our course is for non-medical personnel who may become involved as primary responders to treat and stabilize victims of gunshot wounds. Originally designed primarily for firearm instructors, home owners/defenders and street police officers, we have also given this course to Federal and Local Law Enforcement Emergency Response Teams and as a Train-the-Trainer program for elements of the United States Marine Corps.

This is a shooting course combined with what you need to do immediately afterward to increase the survivability of gunshot wound victims, including yourself. Important topics include the Effects of Bullets on Human Tissue, Where to Shoot and How to Place Bullets with Surgical Precision. Following Threat Elimination, we teach How to Identify the Seven Life-Threatening Injuries as well as How to Control Hemorrhage, the major cause of preventable death from gunshot wounds, and How to Relieve a Tension Pneumothorax. Accessing Emergency Medical Services and Maintaining an Emergency GSW Response Kit is also covered.

The course will run from 9 AM to 5 PM and students should bring a suitable defensive handgun of caliber .38 Spl/ 9mm or greater. 100 rounds of jacketed, factory ammunition will probably suffice, but you may want to bring more. A minimum of three magazines should be available for semiautomatic pistols and two speed loaders for revolvers are advised. A rigid holster (belt or inside-the-waistband,) magazine/speed loader pouches, eye protection and head-phone-style hearing protection are mandatory. A hat with a brim (baseball-style) is also needed to prevent ejected brass from wedging behind your glasses. Shirts must be closed at the top to prevent brass being trapped against your chest. Drinking water will be provided. You may bring lunch or go to a near-by fast food restaurant, but down time will be kept to a minimum.

Prior firearms training to the level of DTI’s Basic/Intermediate Defensive Handgun or its equivalent from a recognized school such as Gunsite, Thunder Ranch, InSights, Fortress Defense Consultants, etc. is a pre-requisite. (Consult the class coordinator if in doubt.)

Tuition is $260.00 and is due upon registration. We intend to limit the class size to 18 students so an optimal student-to-instructor ratio may be maintained. Checks should be made out to "Doc Gunn, Inc." and sent care of Major Brian Stevenson at the address above. Please direct all inquiries to Major Brian Stevenson at his contact information above. You may also contact Doc Gunn via e-mail at docgunn45@gmail.com

We feel that the Tactical Treatment of Gunshot Wounds is an important skill that should be part of every shooter's armament that has previously been neglected. We look forward to imparting these skills and training with you.

The announcement in message #1 is for a class that I think everyone should complete, even those medical professionals. It combines state of the art emergency medical treatment with the concerns of appying the techniques in a hostile environment. You will also learn why handgun projectiles are relatively ineffective at stopping humans and how to make your own projectiles as effective as possible.

Doc Gunn (aka Anthony Barrera, MD) comes to Indiana every year to teach his signature class it's well worth your time and tuition to do it.

Please see the announcement for registration instructions - contact Brian Stevenson bstevenson@co.boone.in.us (765) 483-6400

    Don't miss this!

I'm not one of those guys who gets all excited about first aid and other medical stuff. You know, the ones who can argue the merits of four different torniquets and has all episodes of Emergency! on DVD. That said, this was one of the best classes I've had, and I'm glad I took it. I encourage everyone I can to take it.

I would LOVE to be at this class, and would gladly take a day off to go, but unfortunately I'm out of town that day. Nuts. Next year hopefully!

I exchanged some email with Doc Gunn about the date. He said there were some scheduling issues this year and that was the best they could do.

It's probably going to be a small class because it's on a weekday, but that means people who do attend will get a lot of extra one-on-one attention and can ask a lot more in-depth questions.

Hopefully I can get signed up for this class. Does anyone know if they accept any other pre-requisites then the ones that are listed?

    Thanks

If in doubt, contact Doc Gunn and ask him.

I might be able to give you a non-binding, ballpark guestimate. What have you done that might suffice for the pre-requisites?

Don't think I can make the much revered Doc Gunn class either.
I need to do the ACT trauma class again though "in the fall." Might need a reminder...

Oy! Well, maybe next year? Doc is a regular at Boone County.

Another option is to take the class from Frank Sharpe/Fortress Defense when he offers is at his place in Crete, IL. They do the "tactical" part with airsoft instead of live fire, but the medical part is substantially similar since Frank learned it from Doc Gunn and assists him when he teaches it at Boone Co.

I have taken Defensive Pistol Concealed Carry class, with Defensive Shooting Concepts; taught by Jonathan Tindal

Have also taken the Tactical Rifle class taught by him. As well as I was in the Indiana National Guard for 6 years.

Thanks for the response. I don't know that person and I don't know the curriculum, so your best bet is to contact Doc Gunn and discuss it with him. I don't expect a problem, but better safe than sorry.

Another class with Frank is on my list. I'm a fan of his teachings and teaching style.
    Can we carry in IL?

You can be armed in your vehicle until you get to his place. Then you'll be on private property once you get there and the state of Illinois can pound sand. Crete is right across the border from Dyer, IN, so it's only a few minutes of Illinois until you get there. If you got out for dinner after class, it's going to be on the Indiana side of the border.

Yeah, it violates my Illinois boycott and I acknowledge the hypocrisy, but the specific circumstances justify it for me.

Plus, he might do it some day at Rochester where he does some other classes. Then you could do the live fire.

Well I have taken everyone's advice and signed up for the class.

I've probably followed worse advice before! :ingo:
