Actually, "an" is correct if the word following it begins with a vowel or vowel sound.

This is clear in your example when McCoy says "not an engineer".

Indeed. "Shalt" is SECOND-person, as in "THOU shalt". Third-person is "shall" -- as in "the thermostat [it, third person] shall remain..."

Sigh. I really hate it when people try to do archaic English and don't have a clue as to basic conjugation.
