In 1976, we went on a family vacation to Montana and the Dakotas. I was 12. We kept seeing all of these greasy biker gangs for several days in a row. Literally hundreds of them! There were apparently few upscale H-D guys back then. We had never heard of Sturgis.

My dad kept a small pistol in our RV. While stopped once to get gas, we were in the company of about 20 of these crusty guys, many with long knives or machetes strapped to their thighs. My mom whispered out the window "Honey...Where did you put the gun?"

While standing at the gas pump, my dad shouted back "What do you want the gun for?!?!" You should have seen all the biker gang guys snap their heads & stare at this nerdy family in the old RV! It really reminded me of something out of a Chevy Chase Vacation movie. :):

It seems like we're losing focus in this thread, so here's what I want from everyone:

    1. Only respond if you do not carry.
    2. Post a picture.
    3. Identify the situations when you are likely to have the most cash on you.
    4. Give the time, date and address in reference to #3 above.

    Thank you.

So you admit publicly that you are going to commit armed robbery if given the opportunity? ;)

I cant believe gun owners dont carry.

Some of us understand that guns aren't magic and feel that having one without participating in regular training and practice isn't responsible. Just because you carry a gun doesn't mean you're always protected from anything. If you don't know what you're doing, you run the risk of tipping the balance toward making things worse.

A lot of people take training very regularly. While I don't think it should be mandated for reasons beyond the scope of the thread, it should be strongly encouraged.

I can see the comedy in this.

Truth is, you were most likely safer at that time with those people than ever.
    Just saying.

I have a lifetime LTCH and have taken an NRA Basic CCW class but don't carry. After taking the CCW class I decided that the responsibilites were too great to carry given my gun skills. Defending the home is a different story and S&W and Remington are my security system. If the current demand for guns ever subsided I might consider a M&P 9c or M&P Shield for CC. My current HGs are all full size and more suitable for range use.

Training is great and I highly recommend it.

BUT, using a firearm to defend yourself isn't rocket science, and MANY people prove this by successfully defending themselves every day.

How much training do you think you need? How much training/practice to you think the avg. LEO has?

    Food for thought.

I would never be without a firearm. NEVER. I also do not dress around my gun. I put on clothes, then my belt, then my holster, Glock, mag pouches, and KaBar TDI. I don't worry about concealing, so the hassle of covering it is non existent. If it's cold, my coat covers it. If it's not, it's open.

I don't see why anyone would choose to not carry. But, that's me.

Do you find open carry draws any unwanted attention?

Carrying a gun does not legally obligate you to get involved in a confrontation.
I would be very hesitant to get involved in any domestic dispute; too often the combatants unite against the savior.
If you don't believe you're skilled enough or know enough about what is happening to pull your gun, don't.
You are responsible for every bullet that you shoot.
Sometimes, you just need to be a good witness.
Sometimes, you need to run and hide.
If you're not absolutely sure you know what's going on, stay out of it.:oldwise:

Hardly anyone notices. Most that do, don't seem to care, or ask questions.
Kids seem to notice more, maybe cause their eyes are at waist level.

I don't find that it draws any unwanted attention. I agree with the kids things, 100%. I find that they see it better than adults do.

I have had many great conversations about guns and carrying with people. A lot of people are curious, because open carry isn't as commonplace as it should be. Most people just like to ask questions. I get asked all the time about suggestions, or how to apply for a LTCH, or if I'm a cop. I like to think it helps to desensitize people around guns. I open carry into my bank, well, credit union. No seems to mind. It could be due to the fact that the off duty LEOs that work there as security always smile and nod to me when I walk in.

You know Biden's thing about if it will save one life, it's worth it? Well, I see it as, if I can educate one person, it's worth it. Mostly, it's more comfortable, and less hassle, but it does also serve as a political statement.

Ultimately, it comes down to choice. I open carry because I want to, and I like to. I do suggest that you carry something, somehow, and whatever that something or somehow is, I respect your choice.

I have observed folks when around an open carry situation. Some pay no attention. Many look and point, get nervous or just move on but every one see's and responds in some fashion. These observations were made watching others OC, not myself. I CC for this reason. Draw no attention, remain grey at all times if possible. If the bad guy see's you and is intent on doing harm....you are first.
JMHO based on personal observation and training.

    Carry on.

I didnt know you had to tote a gun everywhere you go to enjoy them and learn about them?

You don't! And you shouldn't, until you want to AND are prepared to!

Welcome to INGO....Indiana Gun OWNERS, not Indiana Gun CARRIERS!:)
There is nothing wrong with doing exactly as you are! Stick around here and you can learn a lot.

Why do people feel the need to give a new guy a hard time?:dunno: it's not like he called the LTCH a permit, or misspelled something.:n00b:

I have lifetime LTCH but have only carried on a long multi-state trip. I was concerned about being stranded & vulnerable along the highway with my family.

I regularly travel by car thru the highest crime areas in Indy. I have never had nor witnessed a situation requiring a firearm but do like having the ability to carry if my assessment of conditions changes. When driving, I remain aware of my surroundings & avoid getting blocked in at stops.

I am shopping for a better EDC & may carry more frequently.

I had an uncle that carried all the time, even at home. But he had a reason to be fearful....he was sleeping with another man's wife.

No one has a legitimate reason to be out to get me.

Did the people at The Batman movie, or the kids in the schools have "a legitimate reason" for someone to "get" them?:dunno:
